Hard drives for NAS

Where is everyone sourcing hard drives for NAS?

Are there reasonable 2nd hand options as well?
 
I purchased some 8TB Ironwolf Pro, back when they were more affordable. Already swapped one out under warranty due to it making dodgy noises.
My ZFS RAIDZ2 rebuilt without issues, and I had no data loss.
The 5 year warranty on the pro's seems worthwhile.

I hope their warranty claim process is better than WD.

I gave up after they basically wouldn’t lift a finger and pointed me to the local distributors who couldn’t be bothered either.

Which is why I’m on Seagate again as I always should have been.
 
I use WD Red. Costs more but I trust it more. Got the best deal last year from tech.co.za.
 
I've got old Red's which are still running. Will like to get more but it seems the Toshiba's are a bit cheaper. Are the Toshiba any good?

What do you mean, Ironwolf is a Seagate NAS hdd model...

I’m saying I hope Seagate deals with warranties better than Western Digital locally, because I switch to Seagate Ironwolf myself because WD was so terrible with warranty claims.
 
Pointless if they don’t support the products.
I get it about the warranties, I do, but calling those stats pointless is doing data science a disservice.

eg, Looking at the latest quarterly, anyone installing Seagate 10/12TB drives is in for some heartache. Their 16TB models, on the other hand, performed *really* well.

WD offers higher MTTF/lower AFR across the board - with some exceptions. Understanding that matters. The chances of even engaging with the warranty are surprisingly low - if you use the data available and make an informed choice.

Use case is NAS. Longevity, reliability matter. Why would the most meaningful data set we have that speaks to both be "pointless"

But that’s just the thing I also followed BackBlaze data religiously but in the end it just ****ed me.

Ironically I have said 12TB Ironwolf drives now but we’ll see how that goes and if i have a warranty claim and it works then it’s still a better deal than I had with WD where I basically lost a 10TB and had no recourse.

So I went from two failures across two WD Purple 10TB drives…going to 12TB refurbished Seagates that have been I use longer already without issue.
