Having not read the last 80 pages of this, as well as Part 13, I'm just going in here with a slightly off topic comment.
Some will note that even on here, I have given the DA immense praise. I travel often for work and see the stark differences between Cape Town (where I live) and other parts of the country, namely Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
However, over the last year, I have lost my faith in the DA. Particularly within the area I reside. Our ward councilor (DA) is non-existent within our suburb while surrounding suburbs within the ward get considerably attention.
We've seen a sharp increase in crime and a large decrease in services.
SAPS has always been poor, that hasnt changed, however what has changed is the complete disregard for the area from Law Enforcement (Law Enforcement is part of CoCT and funded through rates), in fact, our rates went up just over a year ago to fund NSO's, which are 5 Law Enforcement offices deployed to each ward. Except, they only work between 09:00 - 16:00, and are under the direction of the ward councilor.
We see them in the area, when the ward councilors assistant does drive throughs, but if you call 021 480 7700, you might as well save your airtime. Someone will answer, a case will be opened, but nobody will respond.
I have a list of over 20 reference numbers of no response that I handed over to JP Smith, which he promised he would look into. That was 4 weeks ago.
Yet, we continue to struggle.
We battle with drug dealers and prostitutes that have moved into the area. There has been a surge of illegal structures and conversions to student houses, a sudden increase in gangsters moving into the area, residents being assaulted and mugged in broad daylight, and residents being intimidated by gangsters.
We spoke with SAPS who told us there is no problem in our area. I then spoke with a detective the following day my neighbour was held at gun point who confirmed that they are in fact struggling with gangsterism in the area.
There was recently a large party at a residents house, consisting of over 600 people, where an entire street was closed off due to the sheer amount of people partying. This party lasted 3 days. Not once did SAPS or Law Enforcement respond even though several calls were made.
There was 2 separate accidents when drunk drivers started driving, multiple assaults on neighbour residents, and intimidation of several others. No help.
Then theres the lack of service. We currently have 2 x open excavations where burst pipes were repaired, a damaged pavement that was not repaired from a burst pipe, and another patch of road that was not repaired (4 months now) after a burst pipe was repaired.
In each case, the city took over 24 hours to response to repair the pipe. In 1 case, we were without water for 2 days before they came out to repair the pipe.
In 1 street, we still have storm debris from the 11 May storm that have still not been collected. Multiple cases and requests to the city and the councilor, no response.
Then theres the increase of student houses. We have several properties that the city is approving student housing on. One structure is to house 70+ students and will be made of 20 x 40HQ shipping containers.
At this point, one must ask after an entire suburbs pleas have fallen on deaf ears, does the DA really care? I dont believe so anymore
