The "random stuff I wanna buy but don't" thread

Does anybody else do this?

- Check out new computer keyboards on Takealot and Amazon. Get disgusted by all the no-name brands.
- Look at keyboards on Carbonite
- Switch to musical instruments on Carbonite
- Switch to Gumtree. Search "Nikon". Bemoan the 20 year-old crap. Search "Canon". See more 20 year-old crap.
- Switch to Facebook Marketplace. Laugh at all the scams. Feel angry too.
- Switch to Booking.com. Find a good hotel deal. Check reviews on Google. Somebody robbed in parking lot. Moving on.
- Walk into outdoor shop and check out Red Dot sight and Victorinox knives ... some Olights for good measure.

Buy nothing. Feel disgusted.

I don't think it's just me, but all of a sudden it doesn't feel like there's any stuff that feels like both a genuine deal and is actually desirable. It's all "cool but expensive" or "random trash".

Just me? What did you end up buying?

I thought this thread was going to be like those Korean dopamine apps where you can browse for things, add it to your cart, check out and track an order but none of it is for real it’s just a way to get a dopamine hit.

Like the “post something you bought today” thread but instead it’s the “post something you wish you bought today” thread. Buy nothing, feel the dopamine hit.

Thankfully I don't suffer from any of this. Sure there are times my eyes wonder on a eg. new MacBook to "reward" myself but then I am like nah, pass.

I get my kicks from seeing a relatively good amount (buffer) in my MM account + my EE account growing. Must still square up TFSA for the tax year.

Lol so sorry for the disappointment. I give you permission to make it whatever you want, if you needed permission?

I ended up looking at a locally-hosted Open Claw VPS for only R270/month... but not sure I'm ready to dive into that specific AI black hole.
 
Hoping to actually see a healthy amount of traction/viewpoints in this thread so we can gauge, not judge.

Not my/our place to judge how one spends their bucks.
 
I want a cheapie 2/5/10Gb managed 8 port switch so I can finally VLAN my home network. AliExpress says around R1k.
I might just bite and get 2 (1 for study, 1 for the roof where I want to replace the current AP with 1-3 APs).

Or take the flakey 8 port Huawei S5700Li switch in my scrapping pile at work (suspect PSU issue, but can possibly hack it to run off my 12v battery system; doesn't like power dips). The AP will have to be smarter to handle VLANs for different SSIDs though. 2 APs will be better 1 though -- I get complaints about the phone not getting WiFi while on the bog :rolleyes: .

I've been waiting over a year for my RISC-V Orange Pi R2S to get proper Openwrt support (current pull request looks almost there). Fibre is 75Mbps and maxing out my ancient 100Mbps OpenWRT flashed router.

Decisions, will-power and time...

A game-changer for me was buying a cheap 3-pack of Mercusys Halo routers. No more dead spots, a single wi-fi SSiD, no speed issues.
 
Nope, can’t say I ever have.

Sounds like something you need to see someone about.

I feel the same. Since I stopped chasing the latest and greatest, especially where my PC is concerned it feels like I have run out of things to buy.

We are busy renovating at the moment so there is always something to buy for the house but there is really nothing I want to buy for myself.

What’s a good wireless keyboard, 75 or larger, non chiclet style,‘creamy’, for typing rather than gaming?
