Some updates indicate that it is the other way around. The initial avalanche was the earthquake.

This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Additional analysis of long period seismic waves indicate that the seismic energy was instead generated by a landslide. The location of this event was estimated from satellite images

A catastrophic flash flood struck northern Nepal today, August 26, along the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa District near the Tibet border, sending a sudden wall of water, ice, rock and mud through mountain communities and destroying roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

The precise trigger is still being investigated, but early scientific assessments increasingly point to a large ice/glacier avalanche that fell into the Lhende River, temporarily blocking it and then releasing a massive surge downstream.

Heavy monsoon rainfall in Nepal and southern Tibet may have added to the instability, while recent warming is considered a longer-term factor in destabilizing Himalayan glaciers.

The disaster has been devastating, with the latest reports putting the death toll at more than 150 and hundreds of people still missing, including foreign tourists and pilgrims, although those numbers are continuing to change as rescue teams reach isolated areas.

Its very rare to actually be able to tell from videos the force and power with which the water is flowing, most of the times videos never manage to capture the full extent of what is happening on the ground. Anyone in the way of that flood stood no chance at all.

Yeah even the ones we experience in KZN. All those squatters up the heel gets washed away every now and then.

Nasty business, saw a video of someone trying to retrieve a gas cylinder being swept away and another looked like they were stealing jewellery from a dead women. I hate poverty.

This flood pales in comparison to both the Indian Ocean and the Japan tsunami's. Imo.

In terms of scale yes, But those tsunamis don't come close in in terms of intensity and rapid progression. To see mud, boulders and debris flowing at that rate is quite different to sea water with debris only.
