The alleged mastermind behind the September 11 terror attacks will go on military trial in 2028, a judge has ruled.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has been held at Guantanamo Bay, the US detention camp in Cuba, since 2006.

The 61-year-old, of Pakistan, is accused of orchestrating the 9/11 atrocities almost 25 years ago, which saw al-Qaeda hijackers fly planes into the World Trade Centre's two towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

Another plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought to regain control of the aircraft, which was targeting another government building in DC.

His two decades in captivity in Guantanamo have seen planned trial dates come and go, including due to plea deal negotiations and the COVID pandemic.

A Senate report in 2014 also found he had been subjected to waterboarding 183 times. Defence lawyers have argued that the holdup comes from what they say are the government's efforts to hide details of torture.

NBC News, Sky's US partner network, reports the new June 2028 start date was set by military commissions judge Michael Schrama, who rejected a January 2027 window proposed by prosecutors.

It comes after an appeals court last summer threw out a potential agreement that would have allowed Mohammed to plead guilty in exchange for avoiding the risk of the death penalty.

Sounds like both the state and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed have been delaying the trial, the state may be trying to hide its treatment of him (and potentially other prisoners in the process) and it sounds like he has been trying to make a deal that will spare his life.

It's not like he'll ever see the outside of a super max prison even if he doesn't go to trial. And it's military trial so he's not going anywhere. 20 years in the tender care of CIA interrogators can't be too much fun.

No worries you'll get a fair trial, you just need to wait 27yrs once your memory is toast..

What are the Americans hiding with the Guantanamo bay bs, it’s been like this from the get go, holding people without trial for years/decades, a few innocent people got swept up just because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
It all reeks of a coverup and/or the grossest ineptitude. Nevermind the immense cost to the US taxpayers, what a waste of resource and peoples lives.

The Yanks love doing these sorts of things... it's the culture ;-)

Is he one of the attackers who's passports survived incineration at 815C of jet fuel, molten steal and 80 floors landing on it?

Can just imagine the press release...

"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has been hanged. He died like a dog, a misserable dog. He cried for hours. No one cried for that long before"
