Depends on your need. For example, before we had a kid, I couldn't have cared less about the camera quality. However it has become a much more important feature now. And generally, the more expensive phones have better cameras, more storage etc.

My Wife has amassed a paltry, Terrabyte of photos, so far and counting ...
😥

I am happy with hand me downs, Use my phone to phone (surprise) , banking apps, Gmail, WhatsApp/telegram and browsing. so why the F... must I pay in the 10s of thousands to use those functionalities.

This is RSA; no consequences. Just take one you like, or get a tenda and get 100's of them for da family and pay nothing. Follow cANCer and just steal, re-appropriate one or a few and sell them for R250k each

These days anything over a R1000 PEP phone has a more than decent camera. The R5k Xiaomi I have is great, even the Honor I had before (that backflipped and broke the screen) took great photos.

And phones are especially expensive in SA, because... they can!
We get pomped on tech/electronics :/

In the past I've bought guitar pedals that were like R4k on the shop floor and had them in hand for R1800 all in when I bought direct from the USA.

About R10k to R12k max (via Carb).

I am at that age where a phone/iPhone is just a phone/iPhone.

I would find more far, far, far more value & utility in a higher spec Mac.
Yup, all I want is calls, WA and camera. Most of the time, I don't even know where my phone is. Spend a lot of minutes looking for it.

I pre-ordered the iPhone 18 Pro Max for my son who's turning 18.

Phone will retail here for about R34k apparently, but getting it on a contract with our provider that does 4 contracts for us atm as well as our Internet.

Probably looking at R12k once off amount and then R1300 p/m for unlimited data and calls at 400mbps.

After 2 years it will be around R700 p/m just for the data/calls as the device will be paid.

So phone will cost around R27k

Come forward Mr "Over R30k" - What can your R30k phone do, that my R15k phone can't?
Has a camera extender kit that attaches to the phone and can take pictures at 400x zoom where you would need a DSLR wildlife lense to get a similar shot. Also a Zeiss lense which is one of the best in world. Vivo x300pro.

My P20 Pro gave up after almost 8 years. Two OEM screen replacements and a battery change. Was then forced to buy a new phone. Keep it till it gives up.
I’m due for a new battery soon but I’m happy with the device’s performance so why bother upgrading.

I take great photos with it, objectively speaking, and it’s still receiving updates.
