or you could go up a cliff quickly, as outrunning it is impossible.

You don't. Just like in a Tsunami it's the force and debris that kills you no matter how good of a swimmer you are. Getting to high ground is your only hope.

Yeah, I think natural instinct is to run in the opposite direction, but if you look at that border post, there only real chance would have been to try and get up the walls of the ravine, probably not much of a chance and very easy to say in hindsight. :(

I think in this case you only had a chance if you could see from a distance where it was coming from. Most people only heard the sound before suddenly being overwhelmed. Probably just became a herd formation and running in the direction you see other people running without having the time to make any sense of it...
 
Sad thing is some will still try to rebuild their town on the river bank only for this to happen again in the future.

China has warned there is a "high risk" that a lake which formed after the recent landslide near the Nepal-Tibet border may breach its banks, causing a second flood downstream.

The warning comes after Wednesday's deadly flash flood in the same area which scientists say was triggered by the collapse of a mountain glacier into a river.

As of Friday, an estimated 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated at the barrier lake, according to state broadcaster CCTV. A barrier lake is a body of water formed when debris dams up a river.
