Gaming price increases hit South Africa

Love the bit about Switch 2 games going up in price.

here i thought wow they expensive to start with avoid (now imagine you bought one for upcoming titles to find out you gonna pay 2k for a game) To think my first job was a packer i could buy a PS2 game with a weeks wages.

And then finding out said game sucks and you wasted your 2k (for example) and cant sell it cause its digitally locked (is it? cant remember).

PC gaming have noticed passed few months but mostly on big Developers and not all of them are jumping on that price hike ship not like activision oh then again they always were expensive.

Its like the 80s all over again in a way. At least something good came out after that crash.

Seems the sector of the population that can actually afford to buy their games is shrinking rapidly. I can remember when a games was a maximum of R200.00 and R100.00 on special. The creation of the 'global market' did more harm than good.

Games going for R1500 on Steam.

Fvcking lol! There isn't even a disc.
there is always.... a sale ..at some point

MGS collection i think i got for like R400 bucks it goes on sale every March/April at that price tag miss it wait a year.

gonna do the same with vol 2 since im in no rush.

some games are a LOT cheaper for us than the US tho i.e 007 game i paid next to nothing for it while they paid like over a k for it.

I remember my mom got me a PS1 in mmm 1997 christmass was the last unit as well they were like 2k back then

think the PS2 was also about that price when it was later that year ...2005 i think about
PS3 mmmm originally 4-6k im going by memory i bought my little bros one from him and then it died then a friend got spares from Makro for R1200 each sold me one (thanks Driaan) and i still have it too. heck i still have all the controllers and they still work.

But after that prices just jumped.

on your graph you can see how the world turned to a sh*t show on costs.

*edit*

To the kids reading this

Back in your dads day a game would cost R80 early 90s then R350 towards end of the 90s and then 500-550 00s-mid 00s then PS4 erra was about mm R700

Let that sink in lol but again the dollar was not as strong against the rand as well and the 50-60 $ or in Euros too was the standard price for games for 30 years not even suprised it went to 70$ and 80$ a game

but the 100$ mark latley feels like greed blame Nintendont on that one

Me still playing only Apex Legends/Dota 2 and CS2 all free games :sneaky:

Oh of course.

I have never bought a game at it release price. Always wait for the sales. Helps that I don't need to play the new shiny immediately. I picked GTA V up on a 50% discount.

Literally Covid.

Fvcked everything up, with the rich getting obscenely rich and the rest of us getting progressively poorer. Also the rise of subscription-based stuff, so we pay more for stuff we don't actually own.

100% even as a reseller licences for stuff gone up plans made to workarounds.
I originally didnt mind subsriptions but in the long run i stopped pirating tv shows and recently noticed there isnt really a lot that Netflix has to offer to be honest

and then i go back to Pirate to see whats new and exciting and turns out i missed out on so much.
Just not enough HDD's lol Streaming services spoiled us with on demand but what ticked me off was the disapearance of Star Trek from Netflix when it moved to Paramount + um like hello i was watching that.

But a lot of people are doing home NAS ive noticed unsure if its for that reason long run it cost cheaper than to sub unless you have Vodacom Red VIP where amazon prime is free.

Had MSFS 2024 on my wishlist for a while and managed to pick it up a week ago at 30% off for only R900. But yeah, R1500 for anything AAA I've had my eye on.

Indeed, a thing that kept being pointed out during that time, locking things down is going to cause massive amounts of issues later.
