DStv owner launches movie library with 18,000 films and 4K classics

"Coincidentally", DStv added around 10 new test channels to (parts / all of) their satellite system this morning.
These are likely for different regions, so not all for SA.

Some indeed appear to be detailing tests of movies, but at least one suggests yet another "extra" sport channel may be coming.

“The StudioCanal catalogue, which is one of the most prestigious film libraries in the world, boasts more than 18,000 titles, the largest library outside the US, spanning 100 years of film history,” Canal+ said.

“StudioCanal’s territory footprint spans across the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Benelux [Belgium], Poland, Australia, New Zealand, and also distributing via partners in Scandinavia and South Africa.”

The launch promises several theatrical re-releases, bringing restored classics back to cinemas around the globe.

Notable planned re-releases include Manhunter: The Final Cut in 4K, Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 2D, 3D, 4DX, and D-BOX, Pan’s Labyrinth in 4K, and To Be or Not to Be.

I've never been into consoles, and having to rebuy games for each generation is FREAKING dumb.

PC + Steam all the way thanks. Games have been in my library for 20 years and counting. Oh and Steam specials are unbeatable.

I have never bought a movie digitally, and I'd be scared to do that, because even Google Play says "Nah, you don't own that anymore " from time to time. No notice, no refund. Just de-listed. RIP Mass Effect Infiltrator, one of the greatest mobile games to ever grace the Android platform.

They stopped broadcasting it because apparently they weren't getting great signal from Namibia. That's dumb, I thought SuperSport was the official broadcaster :unsure:

Problem with streaming is titles also just disappear, so something you planned to watch isn't always there later.

Best is to record somehow. But we know it's a capacity issue for those wanting 4K.

These were movies and ones from Canal+. So chances are Canal+ were the a$$holes here, as much as Sony.
 
So, how does a movie get changed to 4K: Remastered from the original; AI frame by frame; another method?

AI is often used for much of it. It's cheap.

This results in many films, eg Avatar, True Lies, Aliens having visible artifacts and distortions.
 
No Nam SA T20 hilites package found on streaming, no vid on SS website either. You'd think they must have something they can have processed by now.

Aha, so AI is just a quick, shoddy shortcut compared to remastering from scratch. Of course it is, sloppy AI!
