Hundreds missing and many feared dead after massive flash flood hits Nepal-China border

I've been to both regions - Xizang and Nepal, although not this far up. This is devastating for the region.

As of 27th 8pm, China news currently saying 558 missing from the port area - of which 260 were foreign nationals.
Don't see anything newer in the Chinese media.

Hundreds of bodies 'no longer identifiable', say Nepal district officials

Officials from the Chitwan district in the Southern Central Terai of Nepal say that of the 233 bodies they've recovered from the flood so far, only four have been identified.

"The bodies/remains collected from health institutions and riverbanks are in a state of decomposition and are no longer identifiable," the District Administration Office of Chitwan says in a statement.

The remaining 229 bodies are being kept in holding centres and health institutions, the officials add, noting that DNA samples are still being collected and recorded.

We can now bring you more on ongoing rescue efforts taking place near Gyirong Port, located on the Nepal-Tibet border.

China's state broadcaster CCTV reports six personnel from the Tibet fire and rescue service as well as 15 people and a dog from the Sichuan fire and rescue service arrived at the site approximately 16:30 local time (09:30 BST) on Friday.

"There was no road... it was all virgin forest and sheer cliffs," rescue worker Zou Mingqi tells Reuters, adding: "As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but ruins."

CCTV says rescue teams traversed dense forest and canyons to approach the area.

Tibet, which Beijing annexed in the 1950s, had long resisted rule by the Chinese Communist Party.

China has quashed protests over the years, sometimes violently, and has been accused of grave rights violations in the Buddhist region. It has labelled the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, a separatist.

That history means the very name Tibet draws China's censors. Beijing's sensitivities are especially apparent at times likes this.

A rare glimmer of good news. Some of the 'missing' are purely out of contact due to broken telecoms, and blocked infrastructure. BBC:
In the past hour, Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has said consular officials have made contact with a 26-year-old Australian who was missing in Nepal.

Cara Severino contacted her parents on Friday. She had been hiking the Langtang trek relatively close to where the flash floods hit and was stranded with no communications.

Her family said in a statement on Friday that Severino had managed to reach Gosainkunda with other hikers and that the plan was to hike back to the capital Kathmandu.

Posting a photograph of Severino with consular staff, Wong said: "I spoke directly with her a short time ago and am very pleased to know she is safe. This is a rare piece of positive news amid a disaster that has brought immense loss and uncertainty.

"While this is a welcome development, there remain grave concerns for the other Australians who remain unaccounted for, and our officials are continuing to work closely with local authorities to locate and assist those affected."

Canberra says there are still 41 Australians missing.
