South African teachers, nurses, and police officers cannot afford to live in the areas they work

Last I checked, teachers get around R32k p/m gross with 50% medical and R1500 rental allowance.

If thats not enough to rent in the area they teach, then they are just bad at handling money. MyBB tends to lump public servants as poor people - they are not. a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom house in Musgrave is max R8.5k p/m for an educator, with parking. That's mid upmarket area too.

You should check again friend. Maybe government teachers are getting that. You can get anything from R10k p/m up to 35k

Starting salaries for government posts are something like R14k

HODs get that. Starting teachers get 10k or so. Brand new teachers fresh from campus get paid from the SGB like 4k.

All educators, even freshly graduated ones, with a REQV14 (4 year B.Edu or PGCE) get around ZAR31 000 approx p/m, in addition to ZAR1 500 rental allowance and highly sponsored GEMS scheme contributions, once they work for and are registered with the DoE.

Im not a teacher. I know a lot of teachers and some of my staff studied to be teachers
 
Government employees in general get paid much better than their private sector counterparts, let's not pretend otherwise.
