Long gone are the days of the ANC getting 80% in Soweto, which they needed to counter the strong DA performance in the northern suburbs of JHB. The turnout in DA wards is going to be off the charts!

Apparently the white population in Joburg has decreased, so I would not be too bothered about the turnout in DA wards.

This is what the greatest liberation movement of all time has to resort to.

- Kgoši Maepa, one of four ANC hopefuls for the Tshwane mayoralty, shared a deepfake video purporting to show DA figures arranging corrupt tenders for tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.
- The DA has filed an IEC complaint regarding the video.
- ActionSA has filed both an IEC complaint and criminal charges against Maepa over separate corruption allegations he spread against Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya that she denies.

A prospective ANC mayoral candidate is in hot water after sharing a fabricated video on social media. The video, which was clearly created using AI, falsely shows DA representatives in the City of Ekurhuleni discussing corrupt practices.

The ANC’s Kgoši Maepa is one of the so-called finalists to be named the party’s mayoral candidate in Tshwane.

The video depicts Tania Campbell, the DA’s former mayor in Ekurhuleni, and Khathu Rasilingwane, a former MMC for community safety in Ekurhuleni, allegedly discussing how to award government contracts to controversial tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.

AI technology is making it increasingly easy to create so-called deepfakes of real people.

In the AI-generated video, “Campbell” – who served as mayor from November 2022 to March 2023 – asks “Rasilingwane” to arrange protection for her with Matlala’s companies because she does not want to use state resources.

“Rasilingwane” then says this is not a problem but that they will need to offer Matlala something in return, to which “Campbell” replies that several tenders can be awarded to him.

“Campbell” adds that once this is done, the DA will stop delivering services to wards that did not vote for the party. “Rasilingwane” giggles with delight at the response.

The video also uses the DA’s logo.

Maepa posted the video with a caption claiming the DA was “deeply involved and created some of the problems we are now seeing at the Madlanga Commission”. He further alleged that the DA was corrupt to its core.

Maepa is a former Tshwane metro councillor and one of four hopefuls vying to be the ANC’s mayoral candidate for the capital.

Ashor Sarupen, chairperson of the DA’s federal council, said the party would be lodging a complaint against Maepa with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

“The DA will lodge a formal complaint with the IEC regarding the deliberate circulation of fabricated, AI-generated electoral material falsely presented as an official DA campaign advertisement,” said Sarupen.

“The video unlawfully appropriates the DA’s name, logo and campaign identity to create the false impression that the party produced and published material that it did not. We regard the manufacture and dissemination of fake political advertisements designed to deceive voters as a serious threat to the integrity of the electoral process and expect the IEC to investigate the matter urgently and take the appropriate steps in terms of electoral legislation and the code of conduct.”

Rasilingwane, who is this year’s DA mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, revealed last week how Julius Mkhwanazi, the suspended deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni metro police, has continued to receive R1.2 million in salary payments from the City of Ekurhuleni after his suspension in November last year.

Mkhwanazi has been arrested five times on five separate charges in the past year.

Rasilingwane said it was “unacceptable and outrageous” that Mkhwanazi continued to receive so much money from taxpayers while he remained in custody.

“Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested five times, on five charges, and remains in a cell and has not been granted bail. Beyond the obvious stench of corruption and criminality, Mkhwanazi is obviously not adding any value to the people of Ekurhuleni, yet he still happily draws his big salary every month. Perhaps he spends it at the prison commissary store?” said Rasilingwane.

In addition to the DA’s complaint against Maepa, ActionSA also filed a complaint with the IEC last week and laid criminal charges against Maepa.

This came after Maepa persistently spread corruption allegations against Nasiphi Moya, ActionSA’s Tshwane mayor, on social media. ActionSA governs Tshwane in a coalition with the ANC and the EFF.

Maepa is allegedly behind claims that a company called Tlopo Construction, which allegedly did business with the City of Tshwane, was used by Moya to build a swimming pool at her private residence.

Moya strongly denies these allegations.

Maepa responded on X, claiming that ActionSA’s national leadership was trying to intimidate and silence him.
