New zero-alcohol driving law in South Africa is coming

You can make all the laws in the world, the police in SA are a joke. Without competent officers to enforce the law, the law might as well be written on cheese.
This is a revenue-generating law aimed at soft targets so it will be enforced...

the slogan is zero tolerance. not 0 % alcohol.
level is 0.05% I think, or 0.08%.
She argued that the country’s current blood alcohol limit of 0.05g/100ml was established decades ago and that a new, zero-tolerance stance is required to address excessive consumption.

“The time has come for us to amend the law, so that we have a clear-cut, easy-to-understand, and unambiguous policy that says drinking and driving is not allowed,” she declared
No she is wanting to change the blood alcohol limit to 0g/100ml

"Sir your car was swerving all over the road!"
"Sorry officer I've had ten pints & feel pissed!"
"Thats no excuse to let your wife drive!"

The one question I have is, why? What problem is this going to solve?

The problem isn't always laws. The problem is enforcement and normalised disregard for the law, and add the law of unintended consequence: some laws need to be repealed quite a way back to get back to sanity.

Politicians like new laws because it shows they did something.
