DIY NAS OS - Proxmox, TrueNAS or Unraid

Put files on drive/directory, it gets backed up, but I want to have my phone back up there as well.

I have installed Ubunutu Server on a VM and am looking at ownCloud.

Not sure if that will work or perhaps Nextcloud? Self-hosted/maintained so needs to be as hassle-free as possible.

This guy does a super straightforward vid for NextCloud and Tailscale. His vid may be based on a Pi, but the same principles apply for pretty much any hardware

For all the Unraid users, version 8 will be released on a new OS. Fedora base built on Universal Blue's uCore.

A few of the headline additions:
  • Faster, self-service security updates: Thanks to the Fedora base and a cleaner distro/OS separation.
  • A built-in backup solution: Back up to the cloud, an S3 bucket, or another Unraid server, with snapshots and full restores built right into the product.
  • Native Docker Compose: Integrated into the Community Apps templating system so Compose templates live right alongside your existing apps. No jumping between a Compose view and a Docker view. Inspired by the excellent Compose work our community developers have already built.
  • A plugin permission system: Before you install a plugin you can see exactly what it's allowed to touch — and decide whether you're comfortable with it. Alongside it, a proper plugin developer SDK to make building for Unraid easier.
  • A more cohesive interface: Across the whole platform: the OS, your account, purchasing, key management, and the new ca.unraid.net Community Apps site. Learn one part of Unraid, and the rest feels familiar. Save an app from your phone, then install it from your server.
  • Better hardware support out of the box: So more of the gear you already own just works with Unraid.
