SARS is coming hard after South Africans looking for over R500 billion

It is likely that the reason for this debt is that those individuals and businesses literally don't have the cash on hand to pay them. So no amount of coming hard at them will change that.

can't really come hard at debt that is uncontested, but if the people that owe the money do not have it to pay, then getting water out of a rock remains in one very old book and is unlikely to be repeated again now.

Despite declaring a house sale for R3.5m in 2022 on which CGT would have to be paid, SARS delayed sending the assessment for 3 years and then levied a R180 000 "penalty" for late payment.

After sending 3 emails over a year pointing out that the delay was caused by SARS, without getting a reply, I visited their Cape Town office. Their argument was that I should have made a voluntary payment. The clerk refused to look up and quote the section compelling such a voluntary payment. I told him he had just invented this to absolve SARS of the error

However, tax law states that assessments are only due within 30 days of being issued. The voluntary payment facility is for when you choose a deferred payment option and then pay the amount due early

The R180 000 penalty was waived
