South Africans are increasingly adopting hybrids that can charge their batteries from an external source, as opposed to so-called "self-charging" hybrids.

Why ? In theory they should mostly charge-up in 15 to 20 minutes. Owners of PHEV's (not me -yet !) also bought theirs hoping to reduce running costs.

I was being facetious. It is just an observation that public chargers are a scarce resource, so preference should be given to vehicles that can't fill up with dinosaur squeezings.

Disagree there, if can charge electric, charge electric.

That said, just plug it in overnight at home if you can, most don't drive enough that it wouldn't already be fully charged.

If it's a road trip, electric charging makes sense, then after go fill with petrol if need the added range.

Just because someone who can only charge electric might need it doesn't mean you should not use public chargers, and the hybrids should usually be smaller batteries so they'll be gone quick enough.

The battery on a hybrid isn't meant for long distance.

Exactly. On a non plug in hybrid is only there to capture the otherwise wasted braking energy. So it only charges when the vehicle is slowed down by its kinetic energy.

Then it’s there to move the car at slow speeds or to start the engine when it needs to.

In essence a non plug in hybrid is there to increase fuel economy. Nothing more. No long range EV driving. That’s why they are tiny in capacity. About 1-2 kWh.

There are enough that have 50km+ range, some 100km+, did specifically say the charging time would be short.
