Mortymoose's Weber & Buitebraai Offerings to the HO's Gods! - Your Pofadder Touched My Skilpaadtjie!

Also managed to find one. :)

What pellets are you using?
The Traeger ones.. I did start looking for alternatives, but the ones I did find (certified food grade) are not significantly cheaper.. I did see that Checkers outdoor sells the Traeger ones for 330-350 a bag on special..

For the smoke today, low and slow 7 hours, emptied about 3/4 of the hopper which was filled to the safety grate..

Let us smoke...

What wood you using to smoke with? Just got myself a little reverse offset smoker but battling to find fruity woods that are no going to cost an arm, leg and kidney
This was on my pellet grill, so the pellets do the smoking and the Traeger brand pellets have a wide variety of different woods stocked well in Checkers outdoor stores..

The pellets seem to be cheaper overall vs wood chips, from what I am seeing.. A 9kg bag of pellets sets me back 430 bucks, vs about 120-170 bucks for 700g of wood chips for smoking..

I see there is a website called firesmiths selling apple wood chunks for 170 bucks, between 1-1.5kg worth of chunks, seems to best value for money but I don't know if they are legit or not..

I seasoned mine today to get it ready for my first cook tomorrow. Pulled pork.

Got a bag of Competition Blend pellets to start off with - R429 at our local Checkers Outdoors. Hoping to find them cheaper in the future.

Not too long ago Checkers Outdoor had a bundle deal sale that worked out to R300 a bag. Also keep an eye on the Traeger website on Black Friday.

No, this is not the right equipment for that. Low and slow only.
I've done plenty of hot and fast cooks on mine, temperature can reach up to 230 degrees C. Pellet consumption is obviously a lot faster at high temps, and yes, a gas grill would still be better suited.

I mean in terms of heat, the Traeger does go up to 230°c which is pretty standard temps for hardwood coals.. so you wouldn't get a sear but, it should be similar to a gas braai, maybe a bit more smokey..

Purrr is looking for something quick... wondering if it will work for a quick braai - it didn't take me long to realise today that getting up to 230c is going to a while. Compared to the Traeger my Weber Q sears like a champ. I'll do a temp read on mine next time.

Maybe low and slow was not the complete picture but it's still not the right tool for the job IMO.

me wondering if one can strip of the fancy stuff on the traeger so you can make a fire in that side box...
