People are changing the way they drive in South Africa

I did this transition many years ago.

The company I worked for did not pay AA rates, and I was forced to use my own vehicle.
I would drive at a max speed of 80km/h.

Company time, company money.
It was the only logical thing to do.

I still like to drive slower when the destination is less than 60 km away.
The time to the destination doesn't increase much.

When I have to drive far, I stick to the speed limit.
 
All the taxi's can now all of the sudden be seen:
Not stopping where they are required to do by law
Not waiting at traffic lights or stop streets and sneak in the wrong lane and pull in front of everyone
Filling their taxi's seating/standing to max plus 40% at least
Screaming down turn only lanes but going straight and then doing 40km per hour in front of those they've just left behind
Saving on maintenance as all money must go to fuel
Etc

Buses as well are now suddenly 'allowed' to stop anywhere on the road to pick up/drop off passengers. Madness.

They are aware that this is now illegal right?
Under AARTO (the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences), "failing to keep left" carries a penalty fine of R1 000 and 3 demerit point.

Well, technically they are overtaking the trucks in the two left most lanes...

Keep left is an old fashioned concept, here in Natal/Durban, the authorities paint the centre lines on the city roads solid line (no overtaking) and teach the new drivers to keep right to avoid parked cars along the edge of the pavements. It follows that there are many confused drivers, and no, before you ask, most of them don't multitask very well.

Keep left applies only on the highways
 
most people in ZA still drive like mindless morons - mostly the Taxi drivers who are still currently the majority on the road - but everyone else is still aggressive and arrogant and overbearing on the road too

Not just them though.

We're see a complete breakdown of the social contract and I now see the great and the good, the 'emergent middle class' driving out of the corporations in Sandton CBD and displaying the same behavior.

These people can't work out what a red traffic signal means. Can't stay between lane lines. No concept whatsoever of lane discipline. Can't turn square at a junction. Full brights in your face or no lights at all. Indicators rarely used but only for a 90 degree turn, never on lane changes or roundabouts. Chucking their fried chicken detritus out of the window. Littering on our lawns.

I think it may well be impossible. With the state setting the example, there is zero concept of civic mindedness or civic pride in our local culture. The proud ANCers don't even seem able to observe everything crumbling around them.

So many places are regressing into a hideous Monrovia-esque hellscape and people just accept that not a single penny has been spent on any public infrastructure.
