Airlink offers flyover black-box data

Airlink has volunteered black-box data from the two jets that flew above Cape Town Stadium to the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Airlink has now offered the aircrafts’ flight data to SACAA for independent scrutiny.

“Airlink, on its own initiative, has volunteered these data sets to the South African Civil Aviation Authority so it can independently review and verify that the flypast was in accordance with the flight authorisation,” spokesperson Linden Birns told IOL.

Black-box data can provide detailed information about an aircraft’s flight, including its altitude, speed and heading.

“While Airlink appreciates the interest and concern, it will refrain from making any further comments while the SACAA reviews the flight data,” Birns added

IMO the issue is not so much whether they flew the authorised profile, but whether the SACAA was prudent to have issued this in the first place. The chances of them objectively investigating themselves seem slim, and oversight from Ministers such as Gayton McKenzie and Barbara Creecy doesn't inspire confidence.

“Ooh I love it, it was exhilarating and thrilling. I think it was extra-ordinary piloting and airmanship that demonstrated talent and the skills that we have in this country. I am very happy because it has made Cape Town viral around the whole world. So, I am very, very grateful and of course, there are always critics. All the good work that we have done in Cape Town has had critics, but you know what? You got to keep going, keep doing the right thing and the fact that these are incredibly skilled and talented professional pilots who are among the best in the world is a bonus.”

If the SACAA publicly admits that they authorised a 200ft flyover of a 165ft high stadium, that will tell the world everthing they need to know about aviation safety culture in SA. Anything else is just brushing it under the carpet, nothing to see here, move along...

And once they have done that, what then? People want to see the Airline and the Pilots hanged. This whole situation has been blown out of proportion since the start.

I have not seen anyone asking that anyone should be hanged, fired or whatever.
All I have seen is that people all over the world say it is taking a big risk of a huge disaster if something goes wrong.

Anyone Can Call It: Any pilot or crew member, no matter their rank, has the power to say "knock it off" if they see danger.
Immediate Action: When you hear the call, you must stop what you are doing right away. Egos and hesitation are not allowed.
Level Off: Aircraft move to a safe, agreed-upon altitude and stop unessential radio chatter.
Assess and Fix: The team figures out what went wrong before they decide to restart the mission or land.

This has nothing to do with aviation safety culture in a general sense.

No pilot is going to try this with you as a passenger on your flight from jhb to Capetown.

OMG
Do you comprehend that when I go to an air show I know they have done everything possible to make sure me as a spectator is not in the path of aeroplanes doing stunts. And even then I still know there is a risk that something might go wrong.

When I go to a rugby match I go to watch rugby. Nobody mentioned that I was going to be placed in the path of a low flying passenger airplane

Why do you dramatize this. The airline would had specific permission to in advance, in writing (from the civil aviation authority) (and relevant air traffic control) to fly this route and altitude and speed in controlled airspace. These professionally maintained highly sophisticated aircraft fly over millions of people in Johannesburg every day. There was nothing dangerous about it at all!

12m above 55k people, lol.

The reported 12–14m was above the stadium's highest point. The aircrafts also passed over the lower portion of the stadium, where the actual clearance was considerably greater.

But apparently 6 senior captains, including 2 dedicated safety officers, plus everyone involved in planning, rehearsing, coordinating and approving the flyover all somehow missed this obvious danger. Luckily the expits/karens on these and other forums caught it. 😂

And nothing happened. And let us say something had happened - some people would have been killed, right ? Who cares really. I wasn't there so wouldn't have affected me.
