One bird strike away from disaster — Pilots say South Africa’s world-record flyby was dangerous

These Pilots are just jealous that their balls are not as massive and made of steel as the pilots that performed the flyover. I hope they flyover pilots update their linked in profiles with their achievement.

You cannot rely on radar altimeter readings over terrain and obstacles, it is designed for landing on flat runways. There is so much misinformation in these kind of articles and comments.

The only way it would make sense was if there was a higher risk of a bird strike happening over the stadium.

I can't see the relationship between "more beers and accidents" and "closer to the stadium and bird strikes"

To me its just the lower you go the more risk, due to the chances of hitting the stadium full of people. Its got nothing to do with bird strikes (which are a risk for every takeoff and landing)

Bird strike, enough birds or big enough to take engine out while on 50% throttle, you will drop a few metres while you ramp up the remaining engine. The pilot did not have that margin. For takeoff, one engine is enough to keep you going on full throttle. For landing you are already at reduced power, so not the same flying trying to maintain height.

I loved the flyover, do not get me wrong, but the margin for a whoopsie was little to nothing. One birdie will not bring down the plane, bird will go through that engine and not be noticed, but a dozen or fat pigeons...
 
@Jan Can you not maybe get an interview with 1 of the pilots?

We have sooo many expits giving their 50 years of XP on this.

Would be nice if MyBB could actually speak to 1 of those pilots that did the flyover.

Things like what happened 10 minutes before and 5 minutes after.
At what point was auto pilot disabled.

There is many things that can go wrong in an airplane, not just a bird strike, mechanical, weather etc. Surely its not difficult to understand that if something happen and you suddenly lose power/altitude or whatever. If you 15m from a stadium roof you don;t have much chance of recovery, but if you 50 or 100m you have a way better chance.

I don't even know why we have these discussions on all these threads. It should be common sense.

There were also guys on the stadium roof who would have been telling the pilots when the anthems would be finished and what their altitude and wind is looking like.

So they would probably have told the pilot he is above head height and he is cleared for fyover. As one does.

It would have to be worse than 911.

But yes, that would be a royal fck-up.

Then no one should ever do flyovers.... or airshows for that matter.

99.999 % of the fight is at an altitude where there is zero chance of reccovery.

Yes, it is pointless. The aviation authority will determine if there is a problem and its not safe.
We are just painlessly bickering.

Why? 911 was a terrorist attack on a country not a airline disaster. The worst airline disaster killed something like 580 people. If that plane went into the stadium it would not only surpassed that, it probably would be way more than all the deaths of 911 too.
