Eskom chairman’s message to South Africans who don’t want electricity prices to increase

They're basically approaching the point at which a correctly-sized solar panel array and battery bank will cost the same as Eskom would over a 5 year period for most consumption profiles.

It reported higher revenue despite selling less electricity, due to above-inflation electricity tariff increases it implemented in the country during the financial year.

Eskom saw a significant decline in the power purchased by its industrial customers, historically its largest customer base. These customers purchased 9.7 TWh less energy in the year.

This represented a 22.5% decline from the previous year, which Eskom attributed to hardship in South Africa’s ferrochrome industry.

Alongside declining industry sales, Eskom reported that the agricultural sector consumed 5.7% less of the power it generated as farmers embraced private power generation from renewable sources.

Because those industries were killed by Eskom, either via load reduction or high tarrifs. Now Eskom has too much electricity and no customers.

They are a perfect case of central planning gone wrong. They spent decades telling everyone there wasn't enough electricity and raising price. People listen and move off them. Now they are begging for people to buy electricity. Normal companies would either reduce their product costs or sell off some assets. But not Eskom.

It is a perfect example of central planning gone wrong.

No its just a perfect example of organized corruption coupled with pure incompetence

Mteto is brilliant, don't get me wrong. But we needed him 10yrs ago

Would the batteries last as long?
Home storage batteries will last quite a while. Like 10-15 years. And it's not like they just break at 15 years.

Advantage with home batteries is space isn't much of a limitation in most cases, so you can just keep them working, and add new batteries to the bank as time goes by.

If thats so then maybe there is a very good case for solar then!

Raise the per unit price by 3% in line with inflasion.
Raise the line fee by 200% as that is not counted.

Look at the wonderful performance bonus for the C suite
True.

I've had 0% increase in electricity generated by my Solar PV + battery since 2021.
About 85% of my electricity comes from the sun.
Best investment ever.

Was really pissed when CoJ introduced the R230/pm fee on pre-paid.

Looking at adding more panels and going for 20kWh battery to 30kWh.
F the cost.
I just what to give the zero to CoJ/Eskom.
