How much you need to earn to live a comfortable life in Cape Town

As long as you don't try to keep up with higher-earning friends

I have 2 friends who do this. Buy all sorts of junk and unnecessary clothes

So, they don't try to keep up with you and you are still their friend? Nice, man. Well done on keeping friends even if they are poorer than you.

55k if you don’t have a house or car payments yes.

So earn 55k,
Less 14k tax
Less 6k pension
Less 8k medical cover
Less 6k school fees for 2 kids
Less 2k car insurance
Less 1k household insurance
Less 2.5k electricity
Less 2k rates and more water
Less 2.5k fuel
Less 1k fibre and netflix
Less 4k food

That leaves you with 6k a month to spare for entertainment, kids extra sport fees etc.

And yes house is paid off and cars are paid off.

If you must still buy a house that’s R20k-25k extra and cars is about R3-5k each.

And the funny part is your CEO will come up with a well money is tight so we can only give you a 4% increase, even though your medical aid alone goes up 15% (company medical aid)….and then during the company shareholders meeting you find out he increased his own salary from R32 million to R75 million a year because well it’s tough for him.

4k food for 4 people , that's impressive!! My younger kid probably eats that much alone for the month.

The article says "take home pay"

That means after taxes/salary deductions.

You will barely scrape by at all with R55k, Rent for a home to house a family of 4 is going to be min R15-20k in a not great area, in a nicer area you may as well double that, which leaves you with virtually naught left to survive on.
