Mixed reaction to Nvidia's DLSS 5 announcement

Only time I think it looks good is in the NBA 2K video because sport faces can have that uncanny valley look anyway.

But the rest is just weird. Turns Jesse from a redhead to a brunette in Control and like Moore's Law is Dead pointed out in yesterday's video, makes her old and wrinkly in dark lighting but an instagram model in bright lighting.

Interesting that it's all FP8 so technically compatible with everything that runs DLSS 4.5 2nd Gen Transformer, but NVIDIA chooses to lock it to 50 series right now

certain CUDA binaries can only be read by Blackwell GPUs.

However, intrepid RTX Remix modder "Uncle Burrito" has since patched the DLL file to get things working on Ada Lovelace hardware. "All I had to do was look into it to see what binaries it's actually using. Find the ones that aren't compatible with Ada, and then patch in fresh ones myself," the modder told Tom's Hardware.

Tom's Hardware has verified that Uncle Burrito's patch works when using an Nvidia RTX 4080, and that multiple versions of such a patch are in the works from other developers within the RenoDX Discord server.

It's an early build, I'll call them retarded on release if it's still Blackwell-exclusive and still fp8 because then there is literally no reason for it to be this heavy on a 50 series. Hopefully release is built on nvfp4.

That reminds me...I should check with Nsight.
 

After all the controversy about NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 being a terrible AI slop, I played around a bit with the leaked DLSS5 version in KCD2. First off—what was leaked isn’t even remotely what NVIDIA originally presented. It doesn’t alter the geometry of the models or the appearance of the characters in any way.

What it does is take existing normal maps and create much better skin texture and facial detail (examples 6 and 2) than the lighting model in the game. It also looks a bit like an attempt at subsurface scattering and other advanced skin rendering techniques. But sceptics could say, that its just a fancy version of clarity and dehaze filters which have very similar effect.

I often criticized the character artists’ work when certain faces in the game looked lacking in detail and plasticity, and they’d often show me that it looked fine on their computers and that the problem was with the lighting in the game. Well, now it looks right in the game, too! This is how those faces were supposed to look. The AI isn’t making anything up.

Above all, though, it makes ambient occlusion look like it’s on steroids. You have no idea how terribly—and I mean really, really—annoyed I was that in KCD2 we couldn’t render shadows from hats, hoods, and helmets on characters’ heads, or even shadows from small details on character models (buckles, laces, pouches). DLSS5 does this, and it does it absolutely brilliantly! (see examples 1, 3, 7, 8, and 11).

On top of that, it improves the rendering of shadows in hair (5), so they finally have the right density and darkness.

It doesn’t do much in the environment, but interestingly, it lightens shadows in some places and renders textures within them, while darkening them where it makes sense (10, 12, 13, 14). So there’s a slight improvement here as well. It also renders shadows in grass and vegetation better. Which is definitely a good thing.

For me, this is primarily an excellent photo realistic upgrade to the character lighting model.

The “minor” issue is that it cuts the frame rate in half :)

But its not the infamous AI slop we saw couple months ago. I see huge potential here for the future, and it’s absolutely great that even older games lighting could be improved this way.


And dont believe all those fake videos circulating internet now :)

Now that DLSS 5 is getting buzz, I see all the AMD proponents are out and about taking aim at Nvidia products. Some sticking it hard to mainstream reviewers.

Heh, maybe they should talk about some RDNA 4 GPUs experiencing driver timeouts. Everything gets blamed, except the GPU and the drivers.

Anyhow, I see MLID is leading the charge, very selective nitpicking.
 
At this point, the modders are only able to work with what they are able to extract. Not optimised. It is all experimental. For those who have seen the benchmark numbers, I doubt it will be what it is now when launched.

Hmmm, I was wrong. DLSS 5 comes at an enormous price.

The good news is, DLSS 5 is capable of looking pretty good once the settings have been tweaked by actual game developers. The very bad news is, Nvidia says turning DLSS 5 on will currently reduce performance by 50-60%. And that's across the board—no matter the game.

It is not even that they are marketing it with MFG 6x, and that doesn't bode the 5060 and 5070 series base numbers any good. Never mind the RTX 40 series. Could this improve in time? Sure, but pushing it out as an all-new DLSS stack is questionable. Given that it will be niche, it should have been its own stack.

All their marketing on this is riding on MFG. Sies. I am sorry to say, it is extremely hard to respect that. I am not all cool with AMD at the moment, but this is despicable.

Nvidia would have to optimise this to an acceptable level. Nvidia did tell the press that improvements are coming, but it is a high bar (50-60%) to bring down.

My opinion is simple: this is damn expensive eye candy.

I tried to play around with it, using DLSS 5 swapper. Just out of quriousity was trying to see what it does to older games.
Saw a few examples when the effect is toned down, it can look good.

Not sure if it's because the games I tried to test it on are already heavily modded or because I tried it using my 4080 but
it kept either crashing or the video output frame would freeze, despite the game engine still running.
Turning off DLSS 5 through the Reshade overlay would restore the frame output if it doesn't crash.
