UN votes to adopt new world map to reflect Africa's true size

Yeah, me neither. Nothing changed. All bruhaha over nothing.

It is still ****. Obviously a DEI initiative to just make Africa seem important.

It is completely silly.

Now if you just want to show the continents relative size you take a picture of each one from directly above standardize it to scale. And then you can even layer them ontop of each other.

And it would be better than whatever this map is.

Nope, any artist who has studied will tell you about the distortion caused by perspective, photography is also altered from a flat need by the curvature of the Earth.

If you studied photography you are a moron.

Everyone knows about the distortion and problems of projecting a round object onto a flat surface. We did this in primary school when I was like 9 years old and learned about maps for the first time.
We had to lay out an orange peel on a flat surface to show there's gaps.

If we can get past the obvious common knowledge. You can show a reasonable accurate comparison of the continental sizes and have all the distortion over the sea.

FTFY. That is exactly what the new map does.
Africa has always been accurately displayed on maps. The distortions happens in the north were places like Greenland notoriously is shown to big.

Claiming Africa has now been fixed and people will finally understand how important Africa is is some of the most retarded cope ever.

We've had globs for a long time. Hundreds of years.

I am a utilitarian. If it has no purpose, I am not interested.

How does it benefit Africa economically or politically if other countries think it is bigger in size? Is it simply to make us feel better? Will it change anything?????
Perception of nations/land-masses on or near the equator is different.

Not just Africa, South America, Central America & Caribbean, southern Asia and even Australia are all better proportionally sized. Not many people understand that Russia can almost fit twice inside Africa, for instance. The Mercator map suggests that Russia is much more than twice the size of Africa.

Considering this is the UN we are talking about, countries around the world care quite a bit about how they are represented on a map with regards to their neighbours. Remember many wars have been fought over border lines.

You are correct, but nobody uses the Mercator map. Pointing to an oversize greenland on that map and saying Africa looks too small is just silly. Normal people use a globe or the Roberson projection which this is based on and which is more accurate.

Now some DEI person stretched the section of the map at the equator longer to make Africa bigger. And it just looks stupid.

And for the exact reasons you list. Incompetent Africans just want to feel more important when they were already the center of attention.

This is like one of the ANCs name change initiatives to fix appartheid or some nonsense just worse. It's like they miss spelled the new name.

Another Rietrot classic irony
Back off man. The fellow laid an orange peel out when he was at school. He's basically an expert on maps.

I also remember when that professional swimmer kid nearly drowned out here in the Western Cape Rietie was going on about how he could easily handle the waves and the kid was just a sissy. Professional Olympic swimmer too. A true Renaissance man.

Too kind

but nobody uses the Mercator map.
Mercator is literally the most used map projection. Its also usually the first world map kids are exposed to.

Pointing to an oversize greenland on that map and saying Africa looks too small is just silly.
Africa looks tiny on a Mercator map, Greenland looks huge. Its very distorted.

Normal people use a globe
Literally the most expensive way to represent the Earth

or the Roberson projection which this is based on and which is more accurate.
Robinson is pretty good, I like it too

UN --> Literally a group of people from around the world, lol

And for the exact reasons you list. Incompetent Africans just want to feel more important when they were already the center of attention.
Literally the poorest place on Earth. The only reason its anywhere the near the centre on world maps is because its directly south of Europe.

This is like one of the ANCs name change initiatives to fix appartheid or some nonsense just worse. It's like they miss spelled the new name.
Hang this in the Louvre

Several people mis-type Robertson map, there is no such thing. The Robinson projection is a good compromise, but it does not show equal area, nor consistent size and scale:
The Robinson projection is a compromise world map projection that displays the entire globe at once by balancing distortions across shape, area, distance, and direction.
Rand McNally: Adopted it for general atlases shortly after its 1963 creation.
National Geographic Society: Used the projection for its reference world maps from 1988 until 1998, when it switched to the Winkel tripel projection to reduce polar landmass distortion.
Common Applications: Frequently utilized today for educational materials and thematic world maps where visual balance is more important than precise metric calculations.
