Government officially responds to social media ban for anyone under 16 in South Africa

The South African government has officially ruled out a ban on social media access for children under the age of 16, despite countries such as Australia moving ahead with strict new restrictions.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, in a parliamentary Q&A.
 
This is becoming a demographic issue. Saw an interesting video a few days back on the latest research on why population growth is dropping the world over and they have tied it more now to dropping marriage rates rather than dropping fertility rates. People who are married and want kids are still having kids. The bigger issue is the ever increasing number of single people. The latest breakthrough in understanding however has been tied to smartphone use along with social media. Different countries got access to widespread mobile internet and smart phones at different times and they are now looking at the numbers and finding direct correlation between social media and smart phone usage and a drop in marriage rates in all countries. Kids who spend too much time on their phones instead of hanging out are far less likely to have the social skills and network to find a partner and get married seems to be the current thinking. While I know social media has its uses the social costs are more and more outweighing the benefits.

Doubt they will go away but I am seeing a time when people will understand the dangers just like the world had to figure it out about smoking or alcohol or sugar and eventually movements will start to protect the young, and assist the adults to use it more responsibly and break addiction cycles.

Potential collapse of our entire economic model and retirement program is the one that worries me. The current economic system was built on an assumption of more. More people, more stuff, etc. Its never really been tested for a world in decline. Japan is the first country with any depth of testing for this. Korea is following. Seems to lead to unsustainable debt levels that will eventually implode the currency and economy the way its going.

Not saying I want average fertility to go up to 5 kids per women. The world is full enough. However it would not be the worst thing if most countries maintained current population levels in the name of economic stability.

Yep, a good reminder. Had kind of managed to push that to the back of my mind with all the current stuff.

Fiat currency is either the best or worst idea of all time, and time will tell which it is.
