End of petrol stations as you know them

I can see them switching to self-pumping one day too to minimize HR costs... which will ultimately hurt those employed there.
 
Well no, well, yes, they are improving, but let's be real, my earliest memories are most petrol stations having either a food facility or little tearoom attached to them locally and that already being the norm in countries like the US long before that. Let agree that petrol stations are modernizing and adapting to their changing world, but it's really not the end of anything for them, and it's only the smaller operations that are now playing catch up.
 
None of this is news. It's well known that petrol station dont make money from fuel. The money comes from the shop and the ancillary services on the forecourt like a car wash.

Self service in SA is unlikely unless it's swipe card first then pump. Is that the general process in the US and other places that do this? Last time I saw you had to go into an office to do the payment.
 
Too many fuel stations in anycase.
Not so sure about hanging their sustainability on volatility of fuel price, retail margin is fixed on petrol and within own control on diesel.

Possibility of less demand because of higher prices, but just comes back to my initial statement.

US cards swipe at pump because they need your home zip code to work out the tax on the fuel it changes by state. International or non-standard cards need to be done in the shop. I imagine something similar here but we could probably take any cards at the pumps since there's only 1 tax not per-state/province tax here.

Should not be difficult to achieve as the tech is available. In the UK we have pre-paid at the pump or via an app where it reserves an amount from your card before starting the pump. If you don’t have the available funds for the reserve amount you can just pay a set amount before the pump is switched on.
All of this is controlled by a single employee.
We also pay for air and water at a separate service point.
