US Politics: Catering to Iran

Nice retcon

Its 1984

And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it. Parsons swallowed it easily, with the stupidity of an animal. The eyeless creature at the other table swallowed it fanatically, passionately, with a furious desire to track down, denounce, and vaporize anyone who should suggest that last week the ration had been thirty grammes

I love how he puts the caveat on his mythical payout that it would have to be spent in the US.

How would that even be enforced? Moot I know.
the $5k will come in voucher form.

vouchers are valid for purchase of the following:
1) trump bible

Despite what @Nom Chompsky want you to believe -
The idea that wealthy people will leave due to taxes has been proven time and time again to be false.

Yes, there might be "one guy" anecdotally that does it but as a whole it does't happen.

Wealthy people want to live in their beach houses in California. They want their ski cabins in Colorado. They don't want to live on a beach in Alabama.

Weird how I can disprove this easily with one of the top search results, Yes this period predates Mamdani, but NY has always been a high-tax state regardless of who is in the mayoral office. Using an absolute value is just a statistical trick that cannot be used as a basis for whether millionaires fled or not.

In the most literal sense, this is true. New York has more millionaires as of the latest (2022) IRS data than it did a decade prior.[1] But so does the rest of the country, as economic growth and inflation push more and more Americans above the $1 million threshold

How is this graph relevant?

Why did you leave out the year 2023?

New IRS data shows New York’s millionaire population grew, even as the number of millionaires nationwide shrank.

  • New York gained nearly 2,000 more millionaire filers in 2023 – about a 3% increase, even after the state raised the top marginal tax rate for most millionaire filers – while the number of millionaire filers in the U.S. ticked down slightly.
  • In the same year, filers earning between $500,000 and $1 million rose by over 8,500 – more than 7% – suggesting even more New Yorkers are climbing into higher-income brackets.
Opponents of a wealth tax claim such an adjustment would chase millionaires out of the city. The data suggests otherwise.

  • Following 2022’s top marginal tax rate increase, new data show New York added to its millionaire population.
  • The New Yorkers actually at risk of leaving the city are the lower-income workers who power the economy. From 2022 to 2023, the average adjusted gross income on a tax return of an out-migrating New Yorker fell 15%,from about $125,700 to $106,900.
  • Fears of a millionaire exodus aren’t borne out by how New York’s wealthiest residents have behaved under the state’s current tax code. If anything, the data suggest they’re a settled population that may squawk about a tax increase but not pack up and leave – likely in part because economic, social, educational, and cultural opportunities that come with living in New York aren’t easy to find anywhere else.

Also, Mamdani is the mayor of New York CITY.

Lol, I've read dealt with the absolute increase statistical trick. Yes, of course I know Mamdani is the mayor of NYC, which is by far the biggest population centre within NY state. Doesn't really matter distinguishing between the two as both the governor of NY state and the mayor will 95% be from Dems.

Btw, the pied-a-terre tax only came into force in July 2026, so it's hardly enough time to see its effects quite yet. However, this is unlikely to actually affect millionaires based in NYC because it only targets those who primary home is not in NYC. What's more interesting is Mamdani's claim it will raise $500m - my guess it be far below that because rich people have ways and means of avoiding it.

Which metric by your own standard, will serve as irrefutable fact, that Mamdani is doing a good job, or a "better job" than when it was under republican administration?
