Americans are commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11, remembering the shock, the dead and the sweeping consequences of the al-Qaida attacks on symbols of U.S. might and prosperity.

Friday’s milestone anniversary will bring memorial rituals — wreath-laying, flag-flying, moments of silence, vigils and readings of victims’ names — and volunteer projects in tribute to a day that about half of U.S. adults remember as the most historic event of their lifetime, according to a new poll.

For others it’s an occasion for private reflection — or, in many schools, education — about the attack that unfolded in a single morning but left nearly 3,000 dead and a decades-long trail of aftermath, from personal grief to far-flung wars.

I remember walking past my CRT tv as the 2n'd plane was going into the building. Stopped me in my tracks, still no idea where I was heading because I was glued to the tv for the next hour.

I remember the day clearly, I was in Randfontein buying a second hand car...was in the car park with my dad looking it over when the owner came out of his place and said had we heard about the planes crashing into the buildings in America. We left the car and went to watch the tv with all the footage...

RIP to all those who died in this.

So I was still in school at the time and obviously before the era of Mxit/Whatsapp so I only heard about it after my sports practice at 5PM. There are of course still infamous media on the day, such as the Falling Man photo, but note there was not much 'citizen media'.

The event that changed the world for the worse.

I've been seeing a lot of American comments online and many of them say they wish they could take the US back to the 90s, pre 9/11.

I think the whole world would like to go back to a pre-9/11 time.

EDIT: Sharing where we were on the day; I had just got home from school. My mom and I were sitting in the lounge and she was flipping through channels. We stopped on CNN when we saw the tower burning. While watching the live broadcast, we saw the second plane hit.

Nothing has changed. The US continued to start wars around the world, which people seem to forget was the point of 9/11. 9/11 just gave the US the excuse to finally go to Iraq and Afghanistan.

That’s a surprise, thought you were a retired ballie.

Watched it on our company boardroom VC system. It was all very surreal and numbing. Can only imagine what it felt like to people in the US.

don't worry, he is coming .....

Let us not pretend that any war the US was previously involved in was comparable to the GWOT, and the global ramifications of it, notably the rise of Islamic extremism which plagues just about every continent to this day.

The world was a better place pre-9/11, no matter what the US was or was not doing.

And specific to the US in context of the 90s, the Soviet Union had collapsed and China wasn't yet where it was, so they were quite literally the king of the world. Most Americans would also prefer to be back in a pre-Patriot Act time.

I was on my way home from work and popped in to see my mom who was watching it on the television. At first reports were that it was a horrific aircraft accident then reports of other incidents came through.
