UN votes to adopt new world map to reflect Africa's true size

After a week of arguing, someone comes out with a video explaining that the entire controversy was manufactured by a journalistic headline, and the UN resolution did not endorse a specific map (only the type), and did not prohibit the Mercator protection. Unfortunately rational discussion doesn't make for popular stories...

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, everybody is still going to use the Mercator projection as they do now. If you use google, bing, apple, baidu, openstreet maps etc which is what most people use in their daily lives then they're using a Mercator projection and none of those companies are going to change.

Which is fine as the change is only really apparent when looking at continents, or at least countries.

As I stated previously, for anything smaller than one quarter of the earth's globe, it doesn't matter what map projection you use. Consult any atlas (for those old enough to remember what that is).

Edit: I already stated that I think the Equal Earth projection looks ugly, and many alternatives such as Robinson, though not perfect, do look better.

Scantily clad titan. Cursed to hold up the heavens. Tried asking him about the relative size of Africa and he basically flew into a rage and cursed me and my line so....

Bit of a mixed bag, really.

Now that you mention it (again) I guess the Mercator map does look well rounded, and the Equal Earth one is certainly elongated to us... but that's circumstance.

I'll take the closer to truth perception by choice as well anyway, conveniently to me it's interesting and refreshing.
