An American Airlines flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark made an unexpected stop in Baltimore late Thursday night due to a disruptive passenger, the Fort Worth-based airline confirmed Friday.

Witnesses who were on board the plane told CBS News New York the passenger's behavior was putting everyone at risk.

Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer, and Richard Olenick say the chaos unfolded about two hours into the flight.

"Just like a light switch, all of a sudden, it went from quiet to yelling and chaos," Mejia said. "I turned around to look, and the poor gentleman that was sitting next to him in the aisle seat, the individual had his hands around his neck and was, like, assaulting him."

Mejia and Olenick, who were sitting two rows in front of the man, say they jumped in to help restrain him. They used zip ties provided by a flight attendant and also wrapped him with duct tape.

The witnesses said a flight attendant had attempted to calm the situation, but he allegedly called her a racial slur and made homophobic comments. They said he then became violent, which prompted the crew to restrain him and the flight to be diverted.

Apparently there are around 1500 cases a year where unruly passengers have to be taken care of.

I would have liked to use that duct tape on some wailing fking banshee kids on my last flight.

Would have probably done them the world of good.
 
Lifetime ban on flying incoming. How unhinged do you need to be to misbehave on a plane. Literally the one of the few places where losing your temper will almost certainly result in real world consequences.
 

A disruptive passenger was restrained with flexible handcuffs and duct-taped to a seat as his flight was diverted to make an emergency landing in Baltimore Thursday night, photos and video from other passengers showed.

Richard Olenick and Juan Mejia were more than halfway through the flight when a man two rows behind them in the first-class section started to become belligerent, Olenick said.

“We don’t know exactly what happened, what triggered it,” Olenick added. “But whatever it was, it was pretty intense.”
