The new BMW iX3 has officially touched down in South Africa, just a few months after it bagged the 2026 World Car of the Year award. So, what will the “Neue Klasse” fully electric version of the X3 cost you in Mzansi?
Well, while our original report listed only the iX3 50 xDrive (available locally in both M Sport and M Sport Pro guise, with the former priced from R1 690 000 and the latter coming in from R1 720 000), BMW Group SA has now confirmed the rear-wheel-drive (single motor) iX3 40 will arrive in SA in the opening quarter of 2027, with a starting price of R1 498 000.
As a reminder, the new NA5-series iX3 is a so-called “Neue Klasse” model, riding on an all-new platform rather than sharing the G45-series X3’s CLAR architecture. Furthermore, the iX3 is produced in Hungary, while various derivatives in the X3 range are manufactured at BMW’s Plant Rosslyn here in South Africa.
With the 235 kW/500 Nm iX3 40 still a few months away, let’s take a look at the iX3 50 xDrive, which is powered by a pair of electric motors (an electrically excited synchronous motor at the rear and an asynchronous item at the front), which together generate 345 kW and 645 Nm. That’s enough for a claimed 0-100 kph time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 kph.

The first series-production model in BMW’s Neue Klasse portfolio, the iX3 has officially made local landfall, with the German marque initially offering the all-electric premium midsize SUV in a single flavour: 50 xDrive. Come the first quarter of 2027, the Bavarian brand will introduce the 40 variant to our market.
Available at launch, the iX3 50 xDrive employs dual electric motors – sited front and rear, respectively – producing combined power and torque outputs of 345 kW and 645 N.m. According to BMW, these figures allow the 2 285 kg EV to complete the 0-100 km/h dash in 4.9 seconds on to a 210 km/h top speed. The 50 xDrive features a 108.7 kWh battery pack, which serves up a claimed operating range of up to 805 km (WLTP) on a single, full charge.

Why would a consumer be tempted to buy the new BMW iX3? Thankfully, Neue Klasse isn’t just a term joined by the brand’s marketing department. The new-generation BMW iX3 feels like a completely new generation of BMW, one that has kept the ethos of BMW at its heart but offers a more modern experience. Despite it lacking an internal-combustion engine, the iX3 still manages to have a soul, which is something not all EVs can match. That is why this vehicle should do well in our market and globally.
It’s already been awarded as the 2026 World Car Of The Year title and, after driving it, we can understand why. If BMW keeps making EVs and ICE-powered cars similar to the new iX3, it should remain at the forefront of the premium market despite new, stiff competition.

Any current G45 X3 20d owners here who have owned a 320d or 220d (F22 or G42) that have then gone to the X3?
How has the drive dynamics differed along with fuel consumption?
I am going to be in the market soon (within the next year) to replace my current G42 220d (motorplan expires end of 2027, thinking to either extend and keep the car another 2 years or upgrade) with something more “family friendly” and I think the X3 20d or 30e may be the perfect choice. I want to stay within BMW and really like the current G45.

The Legend
Have a G01 after a F22 220D. Fuel consumption interestingly is around the same. Tyres though are a lot pricier. Driving dynamics are similar but not the same. It is still a BMW but the larger body isn't as nimble as the 2 series. Drive a Audi Q5 and Ford Ranger on occation and the X3 is still leaps and bounds ahead. And the X3 20d variants are always great to hold onto, have a list of buyers ready
