The National Consumer Commission's opt-out registry hopes to stop millions of spam calls targeting South African consumers.

The opt-out is still the most annoying thing to do. Its like the entire system is rigged against the consumer. You need to pay Truecaller or their likes to block out these leeches, if you don't you being harrassed with option to opt-out hoping these "marketers" will remove your info.

Simpler solution, make getting "cold called" or direct marketed an opt in thing with severe penalties to companies who contact someone without them opting in.

I also had this. During the three years that my opt-out was active I missed a lot of notification messages. The new system does not seem to address it, instead relying on the bulk SMS providers to make the effort to apply a granular filter to their messages to individuals (which will probably not happen).

Why must I opt-out when I never opted in. Also if the system is ready to be rolled out why are they still asking for help from tech businesses. I would imagine that they should have finalised all the role-players and stakeholders prior to being ready for implementation. Doesn't make sense.

On all of my good old Nokia phones, I could block SMSs, based on content or words. So I could block all SMSs containing "Congratulations" or "win" or "Final". Likewise, incoming calls based on numbers.....you could even use wilcard characters like "087***34**". The problem is also the network providers....nobody uses SMSs anymore, so the spammers buy bundles for next to nothing. Still revenue for the networks and all blame goes to the Robocallers and spammers while they enable it. Guess who owns shares directly or via PIC in Telkom, MTN and Vodacom and all the BEE smokescreens in CellC. They will never stop it!!!!!
