2-year warning for anyone with Green ID books in South Africa

South Africans who still use the old green bar-coded identity document have been warned to replace it with a smart ID card within the next two years.

LOL. It is quite straightforward process though? I know of many who did it at different banks. I don't see what is stopping people from acquiring it.

Already have a ID why do I need another one/card or go waste time at a home affairs office or pay a bank to get one.

Its getting better, and it is borderline something I might consider wrapping into other admin if I have to go into a bank branch for some random reason in the future.

I have a valid workable ID in the book... so at this point I see no need to waste the time getting the card.

Takes just about 20 minutes though, if you go around 11ish anywhere. I am sure your research in string theory can wait that much. Just do it, man.

If you already have an ID, why do you need to pay for a new one? So it's not the same thing...

It is unfortunate but it is mainly because green ID book can apparently be printed at the nearest spaza shop.

And apparently smart ID card has better security features.
