No new disc games on PlayStation from January 2028

You never could clone a digital game bought from PSN. Or sell it.

The issue about it only being a license is that the license can potentially be revoked. Or so I thought.

But, as I said before, I was always under the impression I had purchased o o e-off instance of the game.

Sony made arguments that people can't expect to own the game, even with BUY because they don't have Copyright to it, as in the actual right to change and duplicate it.

I think most reasonable people think they will own the game in all perpetuity or at least there will never be a time where they can't play the game, maybe they'll give up on it and later it will be abandoned that way but not that someone will just switch it off once purchased. If a digital copy, at least if you keep your console with the copy downloaded on it, it will play until the console dies, even if the store switches off in 10 years or 50 years. Of course we know that 99% of people move on and never really return to these games from 10 years or more ago. New stuff appears or their lives change etc.

Which is exactly what I have said.

But this coke l-cloning analogy was off the mark.

No it's on the mark. Nobody reasonable thinks they don't own the 2l Coke because the recipe is not attached with it. Sony would claim that you don't 'own' that 2L Coke because the recipe is excluded in the sale in the same way you don't also get the right to copy and resell the PSN game you bought digitally.

No, it is not.

Could you trust Sony's numbers though. They have already manipulated the data in favour of digital sales.
Sony knows exactly who buys digital only, physical only and who buys based on the best price at the time. They can likely tell with high certainty when physical copies are gifts as well.

Don't think they made this decision without knowing how much of the player base they would lose. Obviously the savings out weighed any losses. The financials won't lie, it just takes a while to get them

Can you do this on Xbox?
If so, Xbox are smiling all the way to the next-gen bank.

Smart Delivery is technology that automatically delivers the best version of a game you’ve purchased to your console, regardless of your console’s generation – with no extra steps required from you.
For example, if you purchase a Smart Delivery game for your XBOX One and you later upgrade to an XBOX Series X|S, you’ll automatically receive the XBOX Series X|S optimized version of the game at no additional cost.
In addition, if you purchase a Smart Delivery game on your new XBOX Series X|S in the living room and later play from your XBOX One in the bedroom, only the content necessary for the console you’re playing on will be installed. No need for additional content management on your storage drive.
We have answers to common questions about Smart Delivery here.

And sadly they will still lose next gen, most people's libraries are in Sony's ecosystem cause of Tv, tv tv tv and tv aka XBOne fumble at launch. back in the day.

Most people's libraries are Sony because it has been the best option for multiple generations...despite the open wallet MS has.

1995/1996: The PS1 sold over 102 million units worldwide, while the N64 sold roughly 33 million units, meaning the PlayStation outsold Nintendo's console by a ratio of roughly three to one.

Nintendo had a resurgence with the Switch, yes.
