South Africa’s fraud-resistant smart IDs are being forged

I would love to see/hear from someone in the know just how good the fakes are.
Might be a while, the Government is still busy with the tender to install phones in the prisons. That said, the cards are fairly much the same as the ones you get from stores etc., the printers are generic and if you have the template then the result should be near impossible to tell the difference. The big thing here is all Smart ID's have RFID chips in them, and that will be the hard part to fake.

yeah, I never understood why you can just foto copy an ID. It does not contain anything that can be used to ensure it is valid.

it needs some external validation service.

of course it is. until places that require you to present this new card ID have the euipment to read these id cards it's useless. people will counterfeit these things all day, everyday

Very likely the cards themselves are genuine, as you could not expect Horror Affairs officials, who are so prone to accepting cooldrink, to suddenly be ethical and not sell the blank cards, or those that were never collected, so that the fraudsters could use them to generate the forgeries, either bycareful work on the printed ones, or just by printing the blanks and laminating them instead.

Can we all club together and have a series of billboards erected with a shortish headline version of that, maybe in red to catch the attention and then a massive ****ing LOL next to it? And put them up near every home affairs and government building, maybe fly it over during parlaiment opening next year with the Mavericks plane?

I want to give it to our government, they were the comedic relief this planet needed a couple of years ago, but nowadays the current administration of the US seems to have stolen their limelight, thereby turning them from a comedy act into a tragedy of apocakleptic proportions.

I mean anyone can just spend five minutes and print one that looks pretty much identical.

It's whether someone can't distinguish whether it's fake or not that matters.

The whole point of the smart card is that they contain a biometric chip. You can fake them all you want but you cannot fake the biometric data that they are supposed to contain.
