Two minors among eight killed in horrific Mpumalanga crash

Eight people, including two minors, have been killed in a head-on collision on the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Davel in Mpumalanga.

A head-on collision between a Toyota and a Volkswagen sedan claimed eight lives on the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Davel, Mpumalanga, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to Mpumalanga’s Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the deceased include two minors and six adults.

Seven of the victims were occupants of the Volkswagen sedan, while the eighth victim was the driver of the Toyota sedan, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

I know 2 couples that lost children this way. The 1st ended up in a divorce (only the mother was with the kids at the time of the accident). The adults survived in both instances.

Every other day, during school run, I see toddlers on passenger's lap trying to get on dash panel. Some kids are seen standing in a gap between passenger & driver.

Traffic crawls that time but all it will take is one incident really.
 
I drive the N17 often between JHB and Secunda, it really is a gauntlet - people are pushing 160kph+, driving 2 abreast from both directions (it's a single lane road, with periodic double-lane overtaking lanes), it's pretty "hilly" with lots of blind corners, lots of trucks etc.

The near misses I have witnessed is pretty scary.

Some parents simply don't care really. I see this behavior in expensive cars too so buying R2-5K seat can't be an issue.

I used to do that route quite often. Can be misty too in the mornings, which adds to the occasion...

Well that was normal for all of my childhood. But then you just drive properly and don't make an accident.

Head on collisions requires two incompetent and reckless drivers.

If that's an absolute condition, then you're wrong. There are many variables contributing to an accident. Tyre puncture, suspension failure, road conditions, animals, other road users, etc can cause accidents.

99% of the time it is human error and wreckless driving.

Road conditions can never cause an accident because you are supposed to drive at a speed appropriate for the road conditions.

Just one airbag and instant death and they'll quickly learn their lesson.
