It depends. I found a place in nigel where she almost went to for just over 12k. It just takes some time and research, and endless inquiries but can be done.

Normal old age homes are actually cheap, it is the 24/7 care part that gets expensive really quickly.

The facility my friend was in was around 16K pm in Ferndale. Mid care, but they also had a frail care ward but not sure if those prices were different. She was at least somewhat mobile and could take care of her ablutions etc but did need some supervision in the shower as an example. Each ward had a full time nurse though who would help the residents for stuff like that. Medication and food fully managed and taken care of as well as cleaning of rooms, clothes, etc. Only thing we had to do was taking her to outside doctor visits, and providing things she needed like shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. Places like Golden Harvest I think have frail care at about 21K pm.

The other thing there are several cheaper places around, but most often have a waiting list of 6 months long.

There were several recommendations for us, Kimberly and Bloemfontein and such but were warned the waiting list is a mile long.

I was lucky to get a place a mere 36km away from me.

Like I said previously in this thread, I am essentially doing my obligation to keep her alive. I said my goodbyes many moons ago. At this point, my role has effectively been reduced to a monthly bill, shopping list and admin duty.

This is beyond heart-breaking. Been following your thread since the beginning and the above just broke me.

I lost my mom early last year, been suffering from auto-immune for many years and what was supposed to be a routine check-up (scans, blood tests etc) turned into a nightmare - she never returned from hospital and we never got the chance to say goodbye.
