Food poisoning - what to do ?

Not exactly food poisoning, but my 11 year old son got Shigella recently, landed up in hospital, his colon was extremely inflamed. The only cure was antibiotics and fluids via IV, if not administered can be fatal - luckily we have access to healthcare, but can imagine many people dying from something so "simple" Where did he pick it up, most likely at school as we were all ok.

It still sucks that kids end up blind because basic healthcare is so unaffordable/inaccessible in many parts of the world (even here in ZA).

We are super lucky that when our son was born pre-term we had medical aid and he spent time in NICU and it wasn't like hey "here's your kid... good luck".

Contaminated food isn't "toxic" - whatever that means. It's introduced opportunistic bacteria/virus that have messed your guts up. Charcoal does jack shiat against this.

If the contaminant was a parasite...

Sure, maybe I should have been more specific, but it'll bind to *just* about anything in the gut, and it's a cheap and effective way to reduce symptoms so you aren't running to the bathroom every five minutes...

Not food poisoning, but I've had chronic gastritis for over five years (confirmed with two gastroscopies, an endoscopy, and a biopsy), so I have to be quite careful about what foods I eat; I generally avoid fatty foods and anything with dairy, so when going out I always pop an activated charcoal tablet beforehand in case I overindulge in pork chops at a braai... And all I can say is it works well.

Other times, before I had gastritis, I had clearly eaten something dodge and charcoal tablets were an effective way to stop the puking and spuitpoep so I could at least keep a glass of water down. I could keep adding anecdotes...

Depends. The stores are not all the same, some I won't set food in other you can eat off the floor.

cant speak for anyone else, but my own kitchen is near sterile - i'm a little ocd on that.
even dishes - dishwasher temp is set to "inferno".

Well there is your problem , meat with marinate or flavouring .

Many years ago , i had a mate that worked in a butchery in a Supermarket. He warned me about ever buying meat with coating , or pre-spiced etc , as that is the "end of life" meat that is most often used , and the spices/coating helps the supermarket stretch out the life of products to sell.

And while not all is off or liable to make you ill, its best not play the odds.

Always buy fresh from butcher or deli, and spice/marinade it your self.

One thing, did you get sick 6 hours after the pork chop ? If yes then its food poisoning, if it was sooner then its not.
Also, if others eat the food and don't get sick - its something else.

not sure of the time frame - cooked and ate around 8pm on sat.
felt odd around midnight or so - thought indigestion, had some citrisoda.
around 3am things started happening.
by sun, 8am all mayhem had broken loose.

felt like death around 10am - called for help from a friend - go to pharmacy etc.
by 5pm i was wishing for a coffin - called gp.

I have also had issues with Checkers meat recently. Just in terms of quality, not getting sick.

You will know if you need it.

gp is more nervous than me - i'm on a multitude of cardiac and copd meds

Specifically the meat aspect, I steer well clear of meats coated in odd spice combos and 'in-house' marinades. More often than not, these are meats nearing their expiry, and the heavy seasoning is just masking the rot. The hygiene levels where they process and spice the meat are also pretty questionable.

From what I saw, the OP had one of those Texas-style steaks usually sold in bags, which, in my experience, are dodgy.

there is a reason for that, Kosher while super expensive is usually the best quality,
and since its so expensive they usually pay attention to how its prepared/stored,

yeah, I agree the prices are daylight robbery, but I consider it one tier above woolies food sometimes,
problem is in some areas its impossible to find.

Exception would be things like the freshly made sosaties and those kinds of things they wrap up in front of you.

Anything pre-packaged and bagged for multiple days is a very bad idea.

Ha ha ha ha ha, I got that reference.

I do venture to the butcher when I’ve planned ahead, but the butcher inside our Checkers and the local Food Lovers isn’t bad either if you go to them and select what you want.

The danger is the pre-packaged stuff.

Even mince I’ll rather go ask the butcher to weigh and package it there and then, so I know it’s fresh.

Also tend to use a lot of pork mince which you never get on a shelf anyway.
