South Africa’s third-largest mall has enough solar panels to cover 4.9 soccer fields

Interesting.
Three observations from the photographs:
  1. Trade Route Mall in Lenasia seems to have the panels over the parking area, rather than the mall itself.
  2. Lots of action in KZN
  3. The Midlands Mall picture looks and awful lot like somewhere in Cape Town.

Serious question, if our power stations were all working, loadshedding and weekly power outages where not a thing, would people/businesses still have bought solar?

*Assuming the price of electricity wasn't as bad as it is now.

Too many assumptions to really answer. You forgot to add people stopped stealing/vandalising infrastructure. Municipality have competent teams to fix outages in reasonable time (<8 hours)
Probably no but then I am waiting for pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus, not the goverment kind) to fly.

Our business has a 50kva diesel genset which sits idle now that loadshedding is over. Grid is pretty stable.

We recently put in a R400k solar installation because of the cost of grid electricity and we should pay off the loan in 3yrs at which point we will spend nearly zero Rand per month on energy as opposed to R15-R17k a month in Summer.

So, TL;DR: 100% electricity price and increases was our motivation.
