Measles deaths in Pennsylvania reach new levels – not seen in all of the United States since 1992.
Pennsylvania officials have reported four measles-associated deaths in 2026. According to CNN, the country last tallied four measles deaths in a single year more than three decades ago.
The latest involved an unvaccinated 18-year-old in Mifflin County. The coroner identified the cause as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare inflammatory neurological condition that can follow an infection.
The other reported deaths involved a 40-year-old woman and two infants.
By September 14, Pennsylvania had confirmed 693 measles cases across 38 counties.
The numbers show why measles is more than a childhood rash.
The virus can cause pneumonia and serious neurological complications. Infants and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable, including some who cannot yet receive the vaccine or cannot safely receive it.
That makes protection across the community important.
Two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles, according to the CDC. When fewer people become infected, the virus has fewer opportunities to reach those most vulnerable.
There is an important distinction in the death figures.
As of September 15, the CDC had not included Pennsylvania’s four reported deaths in its national tally. State officials classify them as measles-associated, while a county coroner disputed whether measles caused one infant’s death.
The historical comparison therefore reflects the deaths reported by Pennsylvania, rather than a finalized federal count.
Behind that disagreement is an outbreak affecting hundreds of people and families who have lost loved ones.
