All the Halaal ones closed up, Blu Bird Melrose Arch, Grant Avenue Norwood and V&A.
Pizzas were good, overall good nothing too grand.

The strangest thing is that the best pizza I have ever tasted is sold by Spar near me… nothing comes close. They make it as you wait on a fire oven thing. And it’s so so reasonably priced. It’s my go-place for pizza for the past year or so.

We don't get pizza in ZA. The stuff we get here is depressed bread with flavourless, clumpy cheese. And then some nutjob goes and puts cherries on it.

New York is goood pizza.
Italy is religious experience pizza. And proper gelato after.

On the record - if you get the chance - Civita di Bagnoregio, (near Todi), little pizza spot down a back alley. Ridiculously good flatbread pizza, including a truffle one.

New York is goood pizza.

There are a good number of really good pizza places in SA, but our franchise setup generally puts out rubbish.

I mean sure, they try, but pizza isn’t exactly a national pastime in SA like it is in the US or Italy.

Absolutely no question on that front.

But there are a few places that are what I'd call decent... not necessarily New York or Italian good, but still decent.

Not a big fan of their pizza. Tried it a few years back and found it pretentious. Prefer our local pick n pay's pizza counter, and if I want to spend a bit more the local del forno makes a decent one.

Absolutely. I haven't eaten pizza in Italy but definitely many places in Jozi that have decent pizza.

I have had delicious pizzas Luigi's in olivedale, La Trinita in Kyalami, Piccolino's in Fourways, polpetta in morningside and so on. Even certain Andiccio's are ok.

Disclaimer : My pizza standards may not be high as that is not really my preferred food.

Have you eaten Pizza in Johannesburg ? Not claiming Jozi has best pizza but that is where we stay so I know mostly about Jozi pizza places.

These days, I prefer Romans in my town.
There just aren't really any places here that make good pizza.

Parrots in Menlyn Mall had some fantastic pizza.
Take a vegetarian pizza and add beef strips.
That pizza was amazing.

Col'cacchio, on the other hand, is meh.

pizza perfect makes better pizza than col caccio that I think it a bit too overpriced for what it is.

Col caccio? Has been around for a long time and many of the stores in GP closed like 6 years ago

Bunch of places. It's mostly exactly as stated. Depressed bread with toppings.

Been encouraged to try various places with varying degrees of ok-ishness. Last place was... Olive & Plate or some such noise. Meh.

There *was* a tiny Italian restuarant in Lynwood that produced some actually decent pizza and the proprietor would serenade folks but... no more.

That being said, I have never met pizza in ZA that comes anywhere near New York or Italy.

That criminally terrible fake pizza from retailers is just.... No.
