[KZN] SA Weather Service issues heavy rain warning

Measured 74mm of rain yesterday (6am to 6am) in the Pinetown area. Had to backwash the pool to drop the water level in case we get major downpours today.

Didn't do any measurements, but had to do the same this morning, pool was borderline about to overflow already this morning.

Hasn't been heavy rain at all though, just constant.

Hopefully we won't have very windy conditions over the next couple of days, with the soils saturated we will see a bunch of trees coming down.

Today (Fri 18th) is (hopefully) the final day that this cutoff-low will affect KZN, thereafter it will move westwards over the central interior, and (gradually) lose its source(s) of moisture. Unfortunately the forecast for KZN today is much the same as yesterday, expect more hours of rain and fairly strong winds.

Probably OT - Don't you guys do backwash when this happens ? I was told by our pool guy to do it to maintain a specific level after rains. If I recall, he said it affects functioning of pool/heat pump, if not done so. I didn't verify his claims though. I mean it makes sense it affects heat pump because it has to heat more water unnecessarily but not sure about pool pump.

Don't think it really impacts the pool pump so much but I do backwash to maintain a level.... Just with 70 - 100mm of rain in a day you end up backwashing 2 times in a day to stop the pool overflowing.

The SAWS reports a few very heavy rainfall figures for the 24 hours to 8am on Fri 18th. Highest include Pennington South 191mm, Margate 109mm, Durban South (Wentworth) 106mm, Virginia 87mm, etc.

This is kind of "just down the road" from my neck of the woods, but given the steepness of that area this sort of thing is unfortunately not surprising.

Are those the more informal homes that are built in places you shouldn't really be building?

Its a strange mix... its Ingonyama Trust land to start with so no building plan process or anything, and there are normal homes interspersed with shacks (even back yard shacks), but they are stupid steep plots (I had to drive up one of the roads recently and even my diesel bakkie was unhappy at the gradient).

Posting this here, although the forecast is not strictly relevant to KZN, the system is a continuation of the cutoff-low from the last few days:
