Plans by city authorities in Cape Town, South Africa, to permanently cage around 60 chacma or Cape baboons have triggered a bitter dispute over whether wildlife that has adapted to city life should be confined, culled or allowed to coexist with residents.

I know the type unfortunately. People with too much money and time. It's not an accident that almost all animals rights people live in the well-off parts of Cape Town (Atlantic Seaboard and parts of the southern suburbs).

Why do they actually need to remove the baboons?
Are they opening up bins and climbing into kitchens, cant those just be secured better?
That being said I have seen some very funny photos from the area of the baboons inside peoples homes especially the kitchens creating havoc.

There's a lot of logical reasons. Think this mainly has to do with development in the area and good opportunity to save costs/effort on free range baboon monitoring. CoCT funds this largely by themselves even though it's not a municipal responsibility. Other issues - safety, cars, dogs, electric fences would all be in the well-being category.

I have lived in the area and in my experience most people there are pretty used to baboons and accept the risk of their properties being ransacked. Bins have locks not them but make one wrong move and huge mess incoming. Not everyone has lots of money in and around the area there but there is quite a large 'free spirit/hippie community' for lack of a better term. These people will fight tooth and nail about this.

Bottom line, putting them in the big cage is far less PITA for everyone.

This being said I don't support the cage idea. Baboons are nothing new in and around mountainous areas in the Cape and serious incidence are very rare to my knowledge. If you don't like baboons around your property, live somewhere else?
