SARS Hands Tembisa Tender Boss a R1.9 Billion Math Lesson
Morgan Maumela probably thought he was running the ultimate healthcare syndicate.
But it turns out the only institution operating with actual surgical precision in South Africa is the revenue service.
SARS just handed the alleged "tender don" of the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal a brutal reality check. A tax bill worth a mind blowing R1.9 billion.
Following a massive crackdown on his financial activities, SARS took a very close look at the MHR Family Trust. Maumela and his relatives act as trustees for this little venture.
Investigators found what they politely described as intentional tax evasion and obstructive behavior between 2018 and 2022.
The trust officially declared a modest income of just R13 million. Yet somehow they tried to claim over R1 billion in unverified loans and massive salaries as tax deductions. They did this while completely forgetting to even register for employee tax.
Out of all those creative financial gymnastics, the only actual business expense SARS could successfully verify was roughly R50,000 in routine bank charges. The rest was just pure fiction.
Now Maumela is staring down a formal assessment letter demanding exactly R1,929,830,817.
That spectacular figure includes normal tax, severe penalties, and enough accumulated interest to probably build a brand new hospital.
You can siphon billions out of the public health system while politicians look the other way. You can dodge accountability for years.
But the absolute second you try to claim a billion rand in fake tax deductions, the taxman will arrive to permanently ruin your aesthetic.
