South Africa misses out on Starlink Mobile

South Africa's name is missing from the long list of countries where SpaceX's satellite Internet service Starlink plans to offer its groundbreaking direct-to-cell services.

Its just a satellite phone service, i.e it only makes sense if you are in a deep rural area and still have money to burn on connectivity. For the rest of us indoors, in cities or even sitting under a tree we will will continue to use 5G where networks have spent billions of dollars building out coverage in places where people actually live work and play.

Also what about the farmer who has no cell service and who urgently has to call for help when he is attacked by some crazies fueled by the call to kill the boer, kill the farmer? It has taken vodacom so long to get where they have come. Regardless of ownership laws, vodacom and the likes will go to court to block starlink. Thats a big obstacle. These companies also have advisors offering technical advice to the government behind the scenes who actually do the work for legislation.

Funny how reestablishing communication in a country that had its infrastructure bombed to hell due to war is a shoddy product.

Guess relying on towers that get its cables and backup batteries stolen is soooo much better.

Just driving from Gauteng to Eastern cape will have you driving through plenty of towns with barely any cell reception never mind decent internet.

Hell even driving in a "major" town like eSchitweni there are large spots of poor reception, and going just outside the city can end up in areas with no reception for not insignificantly sized areas.

The problem is progress and technology in South Africa has been successfully merged with racism to the point people are not even capable of a logical discussion on how technology that is awesome (who else is doing it at that scale?) is ignored and people are told to be happy without it because of some perceived, but ultimately false, threat.
