South Africans can say goodbye to Eskom for R2,915 per month

Where do you get R25k for the battery?

R25k for battery storage? Lol where did you suck that figure out of?

Been running solar now for 3 years and the problem for me staying in the WC with it overcast winter days is that those solar panels just become expensive roof sheets.

You don’t just look at any single day but the entire picture.

Even in winter you are still generating a few hundred kWh.

July the heart of winter I was still 64% self sufficient making 686 kWh from solar.

That’s a very far cry from expensive roof sheets.

Which also diminishes the articles notion that we can say bye to a utility that generates a baseload.

You can oversize your storage and pv array to account for winter dips. Going 90% off grid is affordable, going 100% off grid is much less affordable. That last 10% is the most expensive part. It depends on how important this is to you.

Adding on a generator might even be cheaper than continuing to pay line fees for very little usage.

We are in a rural area where eskom charges just short of R11/kwh (and the power tends to go off randomly or at extremely inconvenient times). We have 2 choices, either switch to 3ph with 4-5k fees before usage, or pay R11/kwh. When I did the math, I could basically oversize every component of the system and it would still pay for itself in less than 4 years.

We are now completely offgrid. So eskom fcked itself out of my money forever.

You use solar/gas geysers?

You use solar/gas geysers?
Nowadays use a normal geyser and do solar panels, generally more efficient and the panels can be used for other stuff in the house.

There are also heat pump geysers, but they're a bit more expensive, their break even is maybe a bit too far down the line to be worth it based on costs last year, but always check current prices.

I have switched over to a heat pump at the beginning of this month and these are the results on my electricity from just my geyser alone. Before the install, my geyser consumed more than half of my monthly electricity. Since the install, my total electricity bill has halved. It has only been a month, but so far I am happy with the investment.
