Mass shootings kill 27 people in South Africa in one night

In the best scenario, no one should be armed except the law enforcement. The problem is that never seems to work anywhere properly and you can't always rely on them. Not to mention the amount of law enforcement guns landing up on the black market.
The best scenario would be to ban all guns completely but yeah, that's a pipe dream. We live in a world where people need to defend themselves as well, and that means criminals too...

In an idealistic scenario no gun control should be necessary, and you shouldn't need to ban anything at all. In an ideal world people will not want to inflict violence upon one another. In an ideal word I'd to upgrade my Coke-can plinking PCP air rifle to a .22 semi-auto, but the fun is not worth the risk or license effort in the real world we live in.

Men were the majority of bodies?
Does not matter.

The gunman went haywire on everyone.

But when he got to the first lady, bruh, we all know he was thinking how can I GBV her.
Maybe even disappointed there was no kid next to her.

Then he went back to the original plan and starting killing again.

The vast majority of SAns are of a conservative nature/disposition.

As such they don't fall as victim to the incessant, aggressive marketing strategy by pill manufacturers.

So when you get mass shootings, here, it's likely to be a very rare instance. More than of someone on a senseless, violent, pharma-fueled rampage like it is in the US.

But given the slow uptake by the generally-conservative populace, when there is such an incident, the Left-wing media, the likes of which are all anti-self-defense, tend to go more nuts than usual.

This makes news because it's two separate mass casualty events. But on average 30 people are shot and killed in SA on a daily basis out of a total of up to an average of 60-71 murders a day.

Is it more scary that there were this many casualties at one time in one location or is it more scary that up to 71 people get murdered daily.

For now people should avoid 'taverns' or shebeens. But that won't save you from the atrociously high background rate of murder which mostly occurs in areas where these taverns exist.

With 2 to 6 million illegal guns in SA, it's still remarkable that such mass shootings don't occur more often.

They are much more common here than in the USA. It is just a normal Monday morning here.

The reason why they blow up in the US is because they are rare.

Anything in reality is going to fail against a hypothetical utopia. It is a akin to saying: "well wouldn't everyone just be better if the 1st law of thermodynamics didn't apply".

The best case is what works in reality. Having a quick and painless licensing system that ensures that criminals cannot use legal means to obtain firearms and ammo, and a justice system that takes criminals out of society permanently.

I would bet good money that the perpetrators of this shooting have a lekker criminal history.

Mass shootings? Are more common here?
Yes. Both on a numerical basis and a per capita basis.

It is considered a mass shooting when three or more people are killed in a single event.

Julian Rademeyer, senior adviser at GI-TOC, told Daily Maverick that this weekend’s killings were a concerning spike in mass shootings related to organised crime.

“We have had 41 mass killings in South Africa since January this year; that’s plus or minus 196 people killed. We do believe it is an undercount because some incidents go underreported, but this is our attempt to try to get a grip on the scale of this. On these numbers, it’s frightening. If it’s an undercount, it’s terrifying,” Rademeyer said.

Tricky part is US defines mass shooting as 4+ people killed vs SA at 3+. But my handy AI agent did the numbers:

On a per capita basis, it is nearly 6-7 times higher.

Regardless, mass shootings are a red herring. The baseline level of violent crime, gun and non-gun is atrociously high in SA and it takes the odd high casualty event (not 3-4 but more than 10) to write headlines.

Uncle Squirrely too busy playing golf to address this news and do something about it.
Absolutely useless.
