Volkswagen T-Roc (incl T-Roc R)

Review: 2026 Volkswagen T-Roc 1.4 TSI R-Line Black Style

Verdict

Understanding that the T-Roc has always been more closely related to the Golf than to the other members of VW’s extended SUV family helps to contextualise both its broad appeal and, indeed, its price point. More premium and sophisticated than the T-Cross and Polo hatch, and now including all the modern technology and materials found in the brand’s newest global offerings, while we’re inherently drawn to the Life derivative – which is R49 000 less expensive than the outgoing entry-level offering – it’s likely that the draw of the (R689 900) R-Line package will remain. As we’ll see with products like Tengo, the Black Style upgrade feels like a step too far in terms of perceived value. In this context, when fitted with the same powertrain, the new T-Roc is as good as our favourite modern hatchback, the (R660 000) Mk8.5 Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line.

2026 Volkswagen T-Roc tested: acceleration, braking & fuel consumption

We strapped our test equipment to the new Volkswagen T-Roc – testing acceleration, braking, and fuel consumption.

Locally, the new Volkswagen T-Roc is available with the choice of three trim grades: Life, R-Line, and R-Line Black Style. In South Africa, the T-Roc exclusively employs the German marque’s familiar 1.4 TSI engine. The 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit produces 110 kW and 250 N.m of torque, delivered to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. We put the flagship, R-Line Black Style model through its paces in our stringent test regimen; testing acceleration, braking, and fuel consumption.

Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line Black Style acceleration times

On our test strip, the 1 474 kg (tested) press unit accelerated to 100 km/h from a standstill in 9.58 seconds; 1.18 seconds slower than the Wolfsburg brand’s 8.4-second claim. In the overtaking acceleration stakes, the range-topping model sprinted between the 60-80, 80-100 and 100-120 km/h increments in 2.16, 2.95, and 3.51 seconds, respectively.
