Eskom has proposed a benchmark tariff of R1.20/kWh, significantly less than the average prices Eskom's residential customers pay.

Maybe they should focus on the basics first. Like giving stable reliable power.

But if they can afford to give power away for 66.3% Discount. Then they can afford to drop the power by 30% at least for households already under strain from Eskom mismanagement!

None, but Eskom gets rid of its excess generation. So instead of dropping the price a bit so that people use more electricity they will just continue use the home user as a cash cow to subsidize big business. The normal nonsense from government.

People are misreading this. They won't be supplying electricity at a discount for a specific purpose but for large customers that are flexible. So if they suddenly lose 4GW of generation these customers will be expected to shut down unlike residential. It's not a stable or fixed supply. I'm all for excess capacity being used but then it should also subsidise residential users who have been bearing the brunt of the mismanagement.

you can bet though that those users will not drop off at a hint of extra load, but will only ramp down over a few hours, because the earnings are more than the power, so it makes profit to pay any minor penalties as the income is more. you can bet the contracts will be written so poorly that for Eskom to cut them off it is near impossible, because some comrade will lose money, so instead they will continue with load reduction, because residential customers, who are the cash cow, are nothing to them.
