The first digital ID in South Africa — Photos

The Department of Home Affairs demonstrated the first live digital ID in South Africa, which promised privacy and anti-surveillance features.

Will there be WiFi at the borders?

[Swa]

No thanks.

Well, we will all be able to get Leon Scribers ID then, as that is likely to be the first one lost to leaks, and thus you can give your name at any roadblock, and he will get the bill, because it is supposed to be totally secure, just like all government breaches have proven.

[PlutoForrest]

Yeah, they dump that idea quick cause it is not gonna fly.

[Bad Ballie]

I got forced into this stupid card ID already and it will be the last ID I even get; you can shove your digital ID where the sun never shines, and the only flora is bovine

[PowerFactor]

Download the mySpyware app from the government to use your digital ID.

No thank you

On the surface, seems more secure than other govt services. Operates using ISO/IEC 18013-5 mdoc.

The QR code they scanned in the demo represents

mdoc:owBjMS4wAYIB2BhYS6QBAiABIVggz-9w6lOwfHFwr-o3P7UXamROH54WFJKazZVP4W2oLhsiWCDTnti2ftZG-PS_x5EUhjDYjKcxRjXHIZTaoQTpU7PiRgKBgwIBowD1AfQKUI0LuBldGqkQhgM005rY32c

After decoding, there’s a version (1.0), public key, and connection info. The QR code example works over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Essentially, with Schreiber’s example:

I am an mdoc v1.0. Connect to me over BLE using service UUID 8d0bb819-5d1a-a910-8603-34d39ad8df67. I support BLE Peripheral Server mode. Here is my temporary P-256 public key so we can establish an encrypted session.

So, verifier connects directly to the ID holder over BLE, & establishes an encrypted connection. Verifier sends request for x information, and the ID holder can approve / decline. Info is all encrypted and seems local so more secure than over the internet. Response is encrypted with that key (at least, should be, according to the spec).

Amos! Bwahahahahaha!

What increased privacy options are there?

Don't they know that bringing it online, reduces privacy?

Just look at all those sharing options in the app, enabled by default..

wait till it gets hacked by some tenderprenur who wants a tender to fix it at exorbitant prices.

You are implying a tenderprenur actually does something....

[Smiggles]

Great news. Especially if the hospital wants it etc. Let me add it to Apple / Google Wallet.

The more of this AI-snooping digital age I see, the more I want analogue back. Now add that we're in Wakanda.

Things were simpler in IRC.
